Figure 2 Encapsulation as a function of ethanol concentration. Oligonucleotides were added to distearoyl-phosphatidyl-choline/cholesterol/l-0-(2 -(co-methoxy-poly-ethylene-glycol)succinoyl)-2-iV-myristoyl-sphingosine /1,2-dioleoyl-3-dimethylam-monium propane liposomes in varying concentrations of ethanol at an initial oligonucleotide-to-lipid ratio of 0.24mg/mg. Abbreviations AS, antisense oligonucleotide %EtOH(v/v), percentage of ethanol in volume/volume. Figure 2 Encapsulation as a function of ethanol concentration. Custom-made lipids can be produced by de- or reacylation of natural lipids. Commonly used phospholipids with polar heads containing myristoyl (14 0), palmitoyl (16 0), stearoyl (18 0) fatty acids are all classified by four-letter abbreviations, for example, DMPC, where DM stands for the number and type of fatty acids (di-myris-toyl) and PC for the type of polar head (phosphatidylglycero-choline), and similarly DPPC and DSPC (Figure 2). [Pg.447]

In these lectures we present synchrotron x-ray scattering data for two lipidic and three surfactant systems in their multilayered phases. In the first surfactant system the neutral membrane consists of water layers coated with a mixture of the surfactant sodium-dodecyl-sulfate (SDS) and the cosurfactant (pentanol). The layers are separated by dodecane (i.e. an oil dilution study). In the second and third surfactant systems, the negatively charged membranes consist of a mixture of SDS and pentanol, while the solvent separating the membranes is either pure water or brine ( 0.5 mole of NaCl). The lipidic systems consists of a ternary mixture of di-myristoyl-phosphotidyl-choline (DMPC), water, and the cosurfactant pentanol,5 and the binary DMPC-water system. 27... [Pg.252]

We consider the biological multimembrane system of di-myristoyl-phosphotidyl-choline (DMPC) and water. The binary DMPC-water system... [Pg.263]
