Mycobacterium luteus

Two new biologically active cyclopentenones, VM 4798-la (226) and VM 4798-lb (227) were obtained [236] as a 3 1 inseparable mixture from fermentations of Dasyscyphus sp. A47-98. The mixture of the two isomers showed cytotoxic and weak antibacterial and antifungal properties (e.g. Micrococcus luteus, Mycobacterium phlei, Candida parapsilosis, Rhodotorula glutinis, Aspergillus ochraceus and Zygorhynchus moelleri). 

Biosynthesis. The asymmetric incorporation of 4-(2 -carboxyphenyl-4-oxobu-tyrate [o-succinylbenzoate (211)] into phylloquinone by Zea mays has been reported. The incorporation of (211), via its coenzyme A thioester, into l,4-dihydroxy-2-naphthoic acid (212) and menaquinone has been studied in cell-free extracts of Mycobacterium phlei and Micrococcus luteus. First, on their antibacterial activity of phaseolin [(-)-phaseollin, 39] at concentration 10 pg/disk, Corynbacterium fascians was the highest area of inhibition (mm )(ai) 59, followed hy Mycobacterium phlei ai 38, Micrococcus roseus ai 16, Streptomyces griseus ai 10, Bacillus subtilis ai 8, Bacillus megaterium ai 8 and Micrococcus luteus ai 5, respectively.

Studies on cyanobacterial monogalactosyl- and digalactosyldiacylglycer-ols are reported in particular from Phormidium tenue [104-106] and Fischer-ella ambigua [107]. Some of the products from P. tenue showed potent inhibitory activity towards tumor promotion (in in vitro assay of Epstein-Barr virus activation in Raji cells induced by 12-O-tetradecanoylphorbol-13-acetate). Additional novel structures with difference in carbohydrate backbone and fatty acid moieties have been published for glycoglycerolipids of Rhodobacter sphaeroides [108], Saccharopolyspora sp [109], Thermus aquaticus [110], the sponge-associated bacterium Micrococcus luteus [111], Arthrobacter atrocyaneus [112], and from the Mycobacterium avium-intra-cellulare complex [113].
