The majority of studies have used surfactants that wrap around nanocarbons via van der Waals interactions [37]. For instance, surfactants such as sodium dodecylsulfate (SDS) are commonly used to disperse CNTs in aqueous solutions [38,39] while other surfactants, such as Pluorinc-123, are used to mechanically exfoliate graphene from graphite flakes (Fig. 5.4(a)) [40,41]. The polar head group of the surfactant can be used to further hybridize the nanocarbon via a range of covalent or noncovalent interactions [42]. For example, nanoparticles of Pt [43,44] and Pd [45] have been decorated onto SDS-wrapped MWCNTs. Similarly, Whitsitt et al. evaluated various surfactants for their ability to facilitate the deposition of Si02 NPs onto SWCNTs [46,47]. As an exam-... [Pg.129]

Within the huge amount of papers deahng with carbon nanotubes (CNTs or, simply NTs) that appeared in the literature since the seminal work by lijima [151] and exponentially increased in the following decades [152,153], porphyrin-decorated NT represent an important part, both with the single-walled (SWCNTs) and multiwalled (MWCNTs) carbon nanotube type. [Pg.483]

By supporting CNTs with a metal substrate of a redox potential lower than that of the metal ions to be reduced into nanoparticles, a facile yet versatile and effective substrate-enhanced electroless deposition (SEED) method for decorating CNTs with various metal nanoparticles has been developed. This includes those nanoparticles otherwise impossible by more conventional electroless deposition methods, in the absence of any additional reducing agent. In particular, the SEED method can be employed to deposit Cu, Ag, Au, Pt, and Pd nanoparticles on SWCNTs and MWCNTs, as exemplified in Figure 6.10B. [Pg.197]

Multiwalled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs) have been decorated with polyami-doamine (PAMAM) ammonium dendrimers and associated through ionic interactions with [Ru4( x-OH)2( X-0)4(H20)4(y-SiWio036)2] ° , reported above. In this case, the resulting material has been cast on an indium tin oxide (ITO) electrode to prepare an oxygen-evolving anode, operating at low overpotential. ... [Pg.617]

Because of electrode surface area enhancement and their high aspect ratio, CNTs support the production of high current density when used to construct enzyme cathodes and anodes. CNTs are constructed as multiwalled (MWCNT) or single-walled (SWCNT) configurations with various chiral vectors. Engineering the bio-nano interface involves careful selection and application of CNTs with specific properties that enhance DET between the conductive carbon architecture and the biocatalyst. Electrodes composed of (or decorated with) CNTs have a larger surface area for enzyme immobihzation than conventional carbon surfaces the enlarged electrode surface area increases the current density. [Pg.185]
