Mutable

Time is a fundamental property of the physical world. Because time encompasses the antinomic qualities of transience and duration, the definition of time poses a dilemma for the formulation of a comprehensive physical theory. The partial elimination of time is a common solution to this dilemma. In his mechanical philosophy, Newton appears to resort to the elimination of the transient quality of time by identifying time with duration. It is suggested, however, that the transient quality of time may be identified as the active component of the Newtonian concept of inertia, a quasi occult quality of matter that is correlated with change, and that is essential to defining duration. The assignment of the transient quality of time to matter is a necessary consequence of Newton s attempt to render a world system of divine mathematical order. Newton s interest in alchemy reflects this view that matter is active and mutable in nature...

Mutations in either recA or lexA can abolish the SOS-response and eliminate both W-reactivation and W-mutagenesis. It is easy to envisage both immutable and mutable versions of many types a Date object whose attributes you can change, or a set you can move things in and out of (see Figure 2.8). Often a reasonable model could be built with either type. However, models of a mutable Date object often should instead use a mutable object, such as Clock, whose today attribute refers to different date objects as time passes.4 Most interesting domain or business objects are naturally mutable—for example, Customer, Machine, Clock.

Use type constants sparingly for mutable types. A type constant says that there is only one object of this name across every implementation in which the type is used. If the shared object itself is immutable, it can be copied permanently in every implementation. For example, the relationship of Grade.A to Grade.B is always fixed, just as with lnteger.0 and Integer. 1 and Color.red and Color.blue these shared objects can safely be replicated along with their (immutable) relationships to others. With mutable types you should be prepared to organize worldwide access to the shared object or replicate the object but have a fancy scheme to update the cache. 

The global attribute is constant in that it always refers to one object even if the attributes of the target object can change. For example, URL.register could model the unique and mutable worldwide registry of Internet addresses. 

The intrinsic mutability of the mutation in question. In practice the control mutation values tend to fall within a relatively precise range for each strain. Each laboratory should determine the normal range of revertant colonies per plate for each strain.

If race is so mutable, then how is its instability registered at a single historical moment or in a single group s history How is this instability manifest in social consciousness and in the political unconscious ... 

Today Prozac is to antidepressants what Kleenex is to tissues. No book did more to awaken the public to a new generation of antidepressant medications than Peter Kramer s 1993 best-seller Listening to Prozac. Kramer previewed a world in which what is constant in the self and what is mutable, what is necessary and what is contingent, would need. .. to be revised. All this was summed up in what Kramer famously termed cosmetic psychopharmacology. He imagined a future of psychotropic medications so refined that we could choose whichever personality traits we wanted. Of course, it would be hard to distinguish honest free choice from the pressures to become the types of people favored by particular cultures. The book, in short, raises questions about self and social control ... 

Spirit may be usefully contrasted to the deceitful mutability of earthly matter, which changes according to Good or Evil impulses ...

Such are reasons why the story of the elements is not simply a tale of a hundred or so different types of atom, each with its unique properties and idiosyncracies. It is a story about our cultural interactions with the nature and composition of matter. The Whiggish history of chemistry as a gradual elucidation and tabulation of matter s building blocks obscures a deeper and more profound enquiry into the constitution of the world, and the mutability of that constitution by human or natural agency.
