Multiple association

In this section, we attempt to extend our theory of thermoreversible gelation from pairwise association to the more general multiple association. As a model solution, we consider a mixture of associative molecules R A/ in a solvent. Molecules are distinguished by the number / of associative groups they bear, each group being capable [Pg.235]

In order to incorporate polydispersity in the functionality, we allow the number / of associative groups to vary. Such polydispersity in the functionality of polymers is essential when associative groups are activated by the conformational transition of polymers, as in biopolymer gels. In such cases, the functionality / is not a fixed number but changes depending upon temperature, concentration, and other environmental parameters. [Pg.236]

Let n/ be the number of statistical repeat units on an /-functional primary molecule, and let Nfhe the total number of molecules in the solution. The number of repeat units per functional group R = uf/f is assumed to be independent of /. The weight fraction Pf of the associative groups carried by the molecules with specified / relative to the total number of associative groups is given by [Pg.236]

Ovchinnikov s Rule The lowest state of an alternant conjugated molecule will have the multiplicity associated with the Sz value of its MSAD, that is, it will be a singlet ifna = np in the MSAD, a doublet ifna = np + 1, a triplet ifna = np + 2, and so on. [Pg.225]

Another type of ion pairing effect likely to influence the electron transfer reactivity of dianions is the so called triplet association (triplet being here taken in the sense of triple association between two cations and one dianion). When Coulombic interactions in such multiple ions are considered, the electrostatic stabilization is enhanced when the dianion charges are close together, an unexpected observation if the electrostatic repulsions within the dianion are considered [43]. Multiple association of this type probably affects the reductive reactivity of the anionic species. [Pg.100]

The tetraanlonlc porphyrins associate strongly with moderately hydrophobic cations such as CTAC, R N+ and the vlologens. These complexes are readily detected spectroscopically for both 3 and 4 however, efforts to measure precise values of the association constant are frustrated due to the fact that multiple association complexes are formed (eqs. 5, 6), where p4- =... [Pg.41]

For many reactions, there will be no change in electronic state or multiplicity associated with the transition state, nor is there any change in nuclear multiplicity so that we can set Q ec/Qeiec = 1. Further, the ratio of rotational functions can be written (Sec. IX. 10) as (A= B= =C /ABC) for a nonlinear molecule and as I /I for a linear molecule, where I refers to the moment of inertia and A, B, and C are the principal moments of... [Pg.245]

As we have seen, the word dan has a root-meaning of essence and denotes the authentic nature of a thing or its essential quality or aspect. This rootmeaning is illustrated by the multiple associations of the color red. First, red is associated with light and the sun, both of which in turn are related to the Yang principle. Second, red is the color of auspicious objects sent by Fleaven, and especially of revealed (i.e., authentic) scriptures and of talismans. Third, the color red is provided with protective and apotropaic properties. While some of these notions are expressly associated with cinnabar, they are transferred to the elixir via the term dan, which denotes both. [Pg.75]

In spite of very diverse successful practical applications, the mechanism of com-plexation and the relationship between structure and selectivity are still at best only partly solved and remain open for discussion. Thermodynamic studies could supply some valuable information facilitating an understanding of the physicochemical basis of the complexation processes. The GC modified with CyDs is one of a variety of experimental methods employed in the determination of thermodynamic quantities for the formation of CyD inclusion complexes (see Chapters 8-10). The thermodynamic parameters for separation of the enantiomers were determined for various derivatives of CyDs dissolved in various stationary phases [63-65] or as a Uquid derivatized form [66]. Interesting observations were made by Armstrong et al. [66]. The authors postulated two different retention mechanisms. The first involved classical formation of the inclusion complex with high thermodynamic values of AH, AAH, and AAS and a relatively low column capacity and the second loose, probably external, multiple association with the CyD characterized by lower AH, AAH, and AAS values. The thermodynamic parameters of complexation processes obtained from liquid and gas chromatography measurements are collected in Table 5.2. It is clear from those data that for all the compounds presented the complexation processes are enthalpy-driven since in all cases AH is more negative than TAS. [Pg.116]

Forces working among the associative groups form intermolecular clusters whose aggregation numbers cover a wide range.
