Multiphase extraction types

In a multiphase membrane reactor, the conversion of benzylpenicillin to 6-aminopenidllinic acid is performed. The type of microstructured reactor used is a fermentation reactor which contains the enzyme penicillin acylase immobilized on the wall of a hollow-fiber tube. The hollow-fiber tube extracts 6-aminopenicillinic acid at the same time selectively. Benzylpenicillin is converted at the outer wall of the hollow fiber into the desired product, which passes into the sweep stream inside the fiber where it can be purified, e.g. by ion exchange. Multiphase Reactors Reactions between gas-liquid, liquid-liquid, and gas-liquid-solid phases are often tested in CSTRs. Other laboratory types are suggested by the commercial units depicted in appropriate sketches in Sec. 19 and in Fig. 7-17 [Charpentier, Mass Transfer Rates in Gas-Liquid Absorbers and Reactors, in Drew et al. (eds.), Advances in Chemical Engineering, vol. 11, Academic Press, 1981]. Liquids can be reacted with gases of low solubilities in stirred vessels, with the liquid charged first and the gas fed continuously at the rate of reaction or dissolution. Some of these reactors are designed to have known interfacial areas. Most equipment for gas absorption without reaction is adaptable to absorption with reaction. The many types of equipment for liquid-liquid extraction also are adaptable to reactions of immiscible liquid phases. [Pg.35]

Class 1 equipment are also called column-type equipment. Under this category, there are the various multiphase contactors. Gas-liquid contactors include bubble columns, packed bubble columns, internal-loop and external-loop air-lift reactors, sectionalized bubble columns, plate columns, and others. Solid-fluid (liquid or gas) contactors include static mixers, fixed beds, expanded beds, fluidized beds, transport reactors or contactors, and so forth. For instance, fixed-bed geometry is used in unit operations such as ion exchange, adsorptive and chromatographic separations, and drying and in catalytic reactors. The process has been briefly described by Turunen (1997) as an example of process intensification activities. Most of the hydrogen peroxide production is nowadays based on the anthraquinone method. The differences between the technologies include mainly differences in solvents, catalysts and equipment types and details. The process has less than ten main unit operations including two multiphase reactors, liquid-liquid extraction, gas desorption, distillation and filtration. The process conditions do not include high temperatures or pressures. The necessary properties are not readily available from literature because of the large number of components in the process liquid. However, the measurement of the most of the properties is relatively easy because of the mild conditions. The number of components which take part in the main production reactions and separation steps is small. Therefore it was possible to develop reliable models for most of the unit operations and to base the design on these nnodels.
