A typical motor alkylate produced in a hydrofluoric acid-type of alkylation unit when operating without refrigeration at a reactor temperature of 83° F. is shown in Table V. Figure 1 shows the F-l clear octane numbers of motor alkylates produced on an HF unit at various reactor temperatures when charging typical butane-butylenes from a catalytic cracking unit. 

An example of this scenario is shown in spreadsheet 4.2 and figure 4.18. Here the motor octane number of a standard sample of 95 octane fuel is measured each month in duplicate. The Shewhart means chart never goes over the warning limit, let alone the control limit (see figure 4.19), but something is clearly wrong. The seven-in-a-row rule would be triggered, but CuSum also reveals that the system is out of control at about the same time. 

The significance of the equilibrium relationships become more apparent to the refiner when the unleaded research and motor octane values for each carbon group are volumetrically blended and plotted vs. temperature. Such a curve is shown in Figure 4. The sensitivity for the C5 and C6 paraffins is about 1-2 numbers on a clear basis vs. 10-13 for the C6 naphthenes. All of the octane numbers for these components are shown in Table IV.
