In spite of the success in the optimization of platinum catalysts, a major breakthrough in the field of fuel cells is yet to be achieved. Especially, the desire for a significant cost reduction by the replacement of platinum motivates international research activities investigating new catalyst concepts for cathodes. Thereby, the cathodes have to be sufficiently stable under fuel cell conditions the alternative non-noble metal catalysts (NNMC) need to have a high selectivity for direct reduction of oxygen to water. The US department of energy (DOE) defined 25% of the achievable current density of a commercial platinum catalyst as target value for 2015. For fuel cell application, the catalysts should be producible in such a nano-structured form that suitable gas diffusion structures can be built.

It is worth pointing out, however, that personality traits which do not provide people with adequate resources to maintain performance under stress, may compensate by supporting other activities during normal operations. For instance, "externals" may be more cautious than "internals" and take no chances to risk plant safety, while type A personalities may have a greater motivation to progress in their jobs and perfect their skills than type B personalities. Depending on the type of task, some personality traits will produce better performance than others. More research would be needed to develop a better understanding of the relationships between types of task and preferable personality styles.

The challenges in this process are significant. Gasoline-fueled (and diesel-fueled) vehicles powered by internal combustion engines (ICEs) won the market competition over other motive systems and their performance has since been improved and refined for more than 100 years. Furthermore, a vast infrastructure has been established that manufactures, maintains, and fuels the current vehicular fleet in the United States. 

In contrast, imposed groups will necessarily include all persons whom outsiders identify as belonging to them by virtue of some observable physical characteristics. Thus imposed groups will have a much more diverse membership because they will not be limited just to those individuals who are motivated to assert membership. As a consequence, purely imposed groups will tend to be organized by external forces (that is, by those who impose the category on others) rather than by a shared, internal social dynamic. 

The guidelines also stress that the perfunctory execution of any quality system will not guarantee the production of data of adequate quality. The correct procedures for feedback, remedial action and staff motivation must also be documented and acted upon. In other words, there must be a genuine commitment to quality within a laboratory for an internal quality control programme to succeed, i.e. the IQC must be part of a complete quality management system.
