Morphogenetic activity

Of these stereoisomers, compound 19a, of configuration 2E,4E, proved to be the most effective, indicating that the presence of an ( )-2-ene double bond is essential for morphogenetic activity (Henrick et al., 1976). 

A series of bisthiolcarbamates were prepared which structurally adhere to the template and display high morphogenetic activity. The most active member of this class was compound 68. 

It cannot be decided on the basis of experimental results available so far whether the action of the synthetic juvenoids is a hormonomimetic effect exerted according to the same mechanism as that of endogenous juvenile hormones. The fact that compounds with a very different structure from that of natural juvenile hormones also display morphogenetic activity seems to suggest that at least an important part of synthetic juvenoids acts according to another mechanism. According to Bowers... 

Bowers [7] found that some compounds used as insecticide synergists (e.g., piper-onyl butoxide) possess juvenoid activity, and so he synthesized analogues of the synergists, e.g., some aromatic terpenoid ether compounds, and examined their morphogenetic activity against T. molitor and milkweed bug, Oncopeltus fasciatus. He found the first synthetic compound (4, Fig. 25.2.2) with high activity [8].

Corresponding variability in nuclear morphogenetic activity was demonstrated in later developmental stages and during postnatal ontogenesis, when the processes of cell and tissue specialization were complete. This was demonstrated for the differentiation of the crystalline lens (Reeder and Bell, 1965), muscle differentiation (Fieldman et al., 1964), hemopoiesis (Marx and Kovach, 1966), and early neuroem-bryogenesis (Akimova and Diban, 1967). The cortex of 1-5-day-oId newborn rats is sensitive to the injection of the RNA synthesis inhibitor actinomycin D. Under these conditions cortex development is slowed. Injection of actinomycin D after the fifth day postpartum does not affect development of 5-6 layers of cortex (Korochkin and Olenev, 1966 Korochkin, 1970).

The facts obtained by Neifakh concerning the action of radiation on development of the loach embryo clearly fit in much better with this explanation than with the original hypothesis of periodicity in morphogenetic activity of the nuclei. Neifakh himself has put forward a similar explanation of his early results (Neyfakh, 1964 Korolev and Neifakh, 1965).

Several studies have shown that chemical compounds containing specific functional groups or features are more effective arthropod repellents as measured by the duration of protection. - Recently, we reported a study of similar analysis of stereoelectronic properties (steric and intrinsic electronic properties) between natural insect JH, a synthetic insecticide (JH-mimic, undecen-2-yl carbamate), and deet and its analogs. Structure-activity studies on JHs have resulted in the discovery of JH-like compounds that mimic the morphogenetic activity of JH with the aim of controlling insect populations.
