Jacobi and Andre (113) found a longer time of 20 to 50 days, which is consistent with the lifetime calculated by Bates and Hays (11) for odd nitrogen. However, Francis, Chester and Haskin (66) found that dust containing fission products had been aged and that analysis of filtered rainwater gave a much shorter lifetime of approximately 10 days. Recently Poet, Moore, and Martell (195) estimated a mean atmospheric residence time of about four days for particles in the lower troposphere and about one week for particles in precipitation. [Pg.386]

Although these random sources of drug substitutes were often tried and abandoned, the one quasi-official source was Francis Peyre Porcher s (1824-1895) Resources of the Southern Fields and Forests. Moore actually commissioned the South Carolina physician to prepare a work of indigenous plant-drug substitutes, and even years later... [Pg.202]

My thanks are due to earlier authors in physical chemistry who have shaped my thoughts on various topics. Most particular thanks are due to my first teachers in the subject. Professors Karl F. Herzfeld, Walter J. Moore, and Francis O. Rice. In addition, I am deeply indebted to Professor James A. Beattie for his kind permission to reprint definitions from his book. Lectures on Elementary Chemical Thermodynamics. I believe that the influence of this remarkably clear exposition may be noticeable throughout the material on thermodynamics in this book. Chapter 8, the introduction to the second law, is particularly indebted to Professor Beattie s Lectures. [Pg.1019]

We apologize to anyone whose works we have failed to discuss or cite either through inadvertent omission or due to space constraints. This work was supported by NIH grant 1R15CA159202-01 to C.T.V. We wish to thank our collaborators Martine Cadene, Brian T. Chait, Francis C. Peterson, and Brian F. VoUsman. We also thank Kevin L. Moore for providing TPST constructs. [Pg.385]

Throughout the last century or so, many scientists have subscribed to the theory that the coal source material has not formed by the degradation of plant material in situ in a peat swamp environment but rather accumulated from the deposition of transported material in aqueous environments such as lakes, seas, and estuaries (Moore, 1940 Stutzer, 1940 Francis, 1961). Indeed, the concept of transportation of the source material also led to the belief that not one but several processes were responsible for the different types of coal. Thus, there was much thought and discussion which actually led to serious questions about the autochthonous theory of coal formation and also brought discredit on the idea that coals form a prescribed and definite progression from peat to anthracite. [Pg.87]

The continual support and encouragement of Dr. Francis D. Moore and Dr. Ruth B. Kundsin is gratefully acknowledged. Work on which this presentation is based would not have been possible without the diligent attention to detail of Miss M.R. Ball, Miss M. MacBurney, Miss H. Bodman, and Dr. Stuart Jones. [Pg.276]

Francis Moore reiterated this positive view and concluded that vague resection is not a cure for duodenal ulcer it is a physiologic procedure which, by removing the majority of the parasympathetic nerves to the upper gastrointestinal tract renders the management of patients with duodenal ulcer a simple rather than a complicated problem. ... [Pg.250]
