This inert material containing less than 0.5 percent carbon can be easily handled and removed to slag disposal sites. Typical slag removed from the pilot unit at Montebello is shown in Figure 3. 

Pilot Plant. At Texaco s Montebello Research Laboratory there are two pilot gasifiers, Figure 6, each capable of processing 15 to 20 tons per day of coal. Tests on a wide range of coals have been conducted at pressures ranging from 300 to 1200 psi. 

Composition of several of the feed stocks that have been successfully gasified in the Montebello pilot units is shown in Figure 7 and the composition of the resulting synthesis gas is shown in Figure 8. 

A process flow diagram of the demonstration plant is shown in Figure 10. The design of the Oberhausen-Holten plant differs in two sections from that of the Montebello pilot unit. 

Hydrocarbon Research Inc., elected partial oxidation for the Carthage Hydrocol plant at Brownsville. After initial experiments that Hydrocarbon Research conducted at Olean, New York, The Texas Company assumed responsibility for further development of partial oxidation at its Montebello, California, laboratory, under duBois ( Dubie ) Eastman. For conversion of natural gas to gasoline by Fischer-Tropsch synthesis, partial oxidation s advantage over steam-methane reforming lay in its ability to operate at a pressure approximating that of the synthesis, thereby essentially eliminating need for compression of synthesis gas.

In industrial practice, it has been observed that the scale-up of Texaco (not GE) gasifiers from about 15t/day (in Montebello) to 150t/day (in Ruhrkohle) and to 1000-1200 t/day (in Cool Water) was quite satisfactory. However, when conditions were scaled up to about 2400 t/day (Tampa size), lower carbon conversion per pass was observed at the larger diameter and gasifier size, which indicates that the current scale-up method is not sufficient. Therefore, more systematic research work is necessary to establish a more reliable scale-up method. 

There are many varieties of champagne, but some of the most famous are Pommery-Greno, St. Marceaux, G. H. Mumm, Moet et Chandon, Montebello, Heidsieck, Roederer, Mercier, Veuve Cliquot, and Lanson.
