Monitoring the Future study

The annual Monitoring the Future study (MTF), conducted by the University of Michigan and funded by the National Institute on Drug Abuse, found that 17.1% of eighth graders had abused inhalants at some point in their lives.

Results from surveys of high school seniors in previous Monitoring the Future studies show that cocaine use among seniors substantially increased from 1976 to 1979. In 1976, six percent of all high school seniors said that they had used cocaine. By 1979, that number had doubled to 12 percent. This figure remained relatively stable for the next five years, increased slightly in 1985, and then leveled again in 1986.
