MOLECULAR LOGIC GATES BASED ON ELECTROACTIVE SYSTEMS... 

Biochemistry describes in molecular terms the structures, mechanisms, and chemical processes shared by all organisms and provides organizing principles that underlie life in all its diverse forms, principles we refer to collectively as the molecular logic of life. Although biochemistry provides important insights and practical applications in medicine, agriculture, nutrition, and industry, its ultimate concern is with the wonder of life itself. 

In the preceding chapters, reference has often been made to biological molecules and processes, for both biomimetic and abiotic purposes. The emphasis on molecular information in supramolecular chemistry finds its response in the operation of biological systems. There is a molecular logic of living organisms [10.24]. 

As far as we are aware, the first claims of molecular logic appeared from Birge s laboratory at Syracuse University, in the conference literature [192], However, these reports concerning porphyrin molecules have never appeared in the primary literature in sufficient detail to allow corroboration via the usual scientific process. In addition, we have been unable to locate any work that followed up the original claims. It was in 1993 that we published the first general... 

Our 113 represents the 3-input INHIBIT logic operation [74], which possesses a substantial truth table by current standards in molecular logic (Fig. 2).

The versatility of this approach to interlocked molecules make it very attractive as a means towards nanoscale molecular machines in which the motions of the individual components are beginning to be translated into molecular logic operations and mechanical switches. We will return to this subject in the next chapter.
