Molecular distillation Mole fraction

A sharp separation results in two high purity, high recovery product streams. No restrictions ate placed on the mole fractions of the components to be separated. A separation is considered to be sharp if the ratio of flow rates of a key component in the two products is >10. The separation methods that can potentially obtain a sharp separation in a single step ate physical absorption, molecular sieve adsorption, equiHbrium adsorption, and cryogenic distillation. Chemical absorption is often used to achieve sharp separations, but is generally limited to situations in which the components to be removed ate present in low concentrations. [Pg.457]

The vapor pressure of a solvent is lowered on dissolving the solute in it. This lowering for dilute solutions is proportional to die mole fraction of the solute (Raoult s Law). The lowering of the vapor pressure of the solution can be related to the lowering of the freezing point and the elevation of the boiling point. These phenomena serve as a basis for molecular weight determinations. If both components of the solution are volatile, each lowers the vapor pressure of the other and the ratios of the two substances in the liquid and vapor phase are not necessarily the same. The isopiestic (isothermal distillation) method for the determination of molecular weights is closely related to the vapor pressure depression method.10 A weighed amount of standard is introduced into one leg of an apparatus and a weighed portion of the unknown is placed in the other leg. Solvent is introduced into the apparatus, which is then evacuated and thermostated. The solvent will distill from one solution to the other until the vapor pressures (and therefore mole fractions) of the two have equalized.
