The Moldflow Plastics Xpert (MPX ) process automation and control system decreases mold setup time, cycle time, and scrap, and improves molded part quality and labor productivity. Commercial mould filling programs, such as Moldflow, combine the one-dimensional heat flow calculations with two-dimensional viscous flow calculations. Keitxmann et al. (1998) gave the governing differential equation as... 

Short fiber-reinforced systems are particularly vulnerable to formation of weld lines because the fibers tend to align with the direction of the flow. When flow fronts join, there is no fiber crossover or homogeneity, and the problem is intensified with faster reaction and gelling times. To minimize this, consider locating the gate closest to the largest obstruction to the flow. Computerized moldflow analysis can help predict where problems may occur. 

Even though a molder has received a mold intended to meet part performance requirements at the lowest cost, it may not be cost-efficient because of a poor runner design. One can simulate the gate and runner design on commercial CAD programs such as Moldflow before the runner system is built. Once it is built, very limited rework can be done.

The proper gate size/location can be determined by CAE (computer aided engineering) such as Moldflow . The vents can be placed where the weld lines occur and the last area to be filled.
