In addition to the process parameters, there are large numbers of factors that decide the success of an injection molding operation. Mold design, product design, position, and size of gates, type and positioning of runners, etc., are extremely important factors to be taken care of. As previously mentioned, plant personnel were successful at mitigating the black streaks with the use of static mixers positioned inside the injection nozzle. Since the degraded resin was soft and leathery, it was easily broken into smaller particles as they passed through the mixer. Thus, the particles were not eliminated they were just reduced in size such that they did not create as many black streaks. The additional pressure and time that was required to inject the resin through the static mixers and into the mold, however, increased the cycle time to an unacceptable level. Although static mixers can be used to mitigate these types of problems, they do not eliminate the root cause of the degradation problem. [Pg.529]

In addition to high-speed photography, which was used to obtain the results discussed above, other methods have been used to visualize flow, for example, the tracer method.279"281 A typical experimental device consists of a capillary viscometer connected to a mold, which is a simple model of plunger-type injection molding unit.279 A special device was used to introduce tracers of different colors in regular succession. After sample solidification, it is possible to examine the position of the various colors on the surface (Fig. 4.47 a) or through the volume by cutting sections (Fig. 4.47 b). Three general types of molds are used for CM. In the positive mold (Figure 14.3a) all the material is trapped in the mold cavity. The pressure applied compresses the material into the smallest possible volume. Any variation in the weight of the charge will result in a variation in part thickness. In multicavity molds, if one cavity has more material than the others, it will receive proportionately greater pressure. Multiple cavities, therefore, can result in density variations between parts if loading is not done with some degree of precision control.1 278 284... [Pg.444]
