Modified beta function

The a priori information involved by this modified Beta law (5) does not consider the local correlation between pixels, however, the image f is mainly constituted from locally constant patches. Therefore, this a priori knowledge can be introduced by means of a piecewise continuous function, the weak membrane [2]. The energy related to this a priori model is ... [Pg.331]

Beside thioamides, dithioesters are the most stable and accessible thiocarbonyl compounds. Their specific reactivity, in particular towards nucleophiUc reagents and their apphcations to the formation of carbon-carbon bonds, have already been reviewed [8]. However, as shown below, the presence of a phosphonate function alpha or beta to the thiocarbonyl group in phosphonodithioformates and phosphonodithioacetates makes these difunctional compounds very versatile building blocks. Moreover, for the phosphonodithioacetates, the substitution of the methylenic hydrogen atoms by fluorine increases again their potential as intermediates for the synthesis of modified natural and bioactive phosphorylated structures. [Pg.163]

CNTs can be functionalized with protein via non-covalent bond (Li et al., 2005 Kim et al., 2003 Mitchell et al., 2002). For example, (beta-lactamase I, that can be immobilized inside or outside CNTs, doesn t change enzyme s activity (Vinuesa and Goodnow, 2002). Taq enzyme can attach to the outside of CNT, and doesn t change its activity (Cui et al., 2004). Peptide with Histidine and Tryptophan can have selective affinity for CNT(Guo et al., 1998). Monoclonal antibody can attach to SWNTs. Protein-modified CNTs can be used to improve its biocompatibility and biomolecular recognition capabilities (Um et al., 2006). For example, CNTs functionalized with PEG and Triton X-100 can prevent nonspecific binding of protein and CNTs. Biotin moiety is attached to the PEG chains Streptavidin can bind specifically with biotin-CNT (Shim et al., 2002). [Pg.186]

The use of heterogeneous catalysts in the synthesis of urethanes from aliphatic and aromatic amines, C02 and alkyl halides has been explored only recently. Titanosilicate molecular sieves [60a], metal phthalocyanine complexes encapsulated in zeolite-Y [60a], beta-zeolites and mesoporous silica (MCM-41) containing ammonium cations as the templates [60b, c], and adenine-modified Ti-SBA-15 [60d, e] each function as effective catalysts, even without any additional base. [Pg.131]

Cytokines are a potential way to modify the immune system in several situations because of their ability to act as immunoregulatory chemicals. For example, cytokines such as interferon-alpha and interleukin-2 can be administered to treat certain forms of cancer (see Chapter 36). Likewise, certain interferons can help control viral infections, and interferon-beta may be helpful in autoimmune diseases such as multiple sclerosis (see Chapter 34). Researchers continue to investigate how immune function can be manipulated to treat various diseases, and additional immune system modulators will almost certainly be forthcoming. [Pg.600]

The initial successes in MS therapy involved the nse of corticosteroid treatments to indnce short-term improvements in neurological function, and symptomatic therapies for some of the complications of MS. More recently, with improved understanding of the immnnological events occnrring dnring progression of the disease, therapies that modify the natural history of the disease have become available. Interferon beta-lb (Betaseron) is the hrst new treatment for MS to be licensed by the U.S. FDA in the last 30 years. [Pg.472]

Beta-CD was functionalized at the positions 6-0- (70), 2-0- (71) and 3-0-(72) with l-dimethylaminonaphthalene-5-sulfonate [221], The absorption spectra of 70 and 71 were modified upon the addition of a guest. The absorption changes are larger for 70. At the same time, the fluorescence emission was quenched and the emission maximum was red-shifted by the addition of a guest. The fluorescence decay of 70 and 71 was fitted by two... [Pg.57]

Ti-6A1-4V is an alpha-beta alloy that can be modified extensively by both thermal and thermomechanical processing to produce a large variety of microstructures and hence a wide spectrum of mechanical properties. The beta-transus temperature is approximately 1000 °C (1830 °F) and is a function of interstitial content (Ref 1). Samples of Ti-6A1-4V cooled at relatively slow rates from elevated temperatures contain mainly the alpha and beta phases as a result of diffusional transformations, while those cooled rapidly may also contain martensitic phases such as the cc (hep structure) or the a" (orthorhombic structure) phases. [Pg.125]
