Modern Empower

Biotechnology has the potential to facilitate the conservation of biodiversity, but such potential needs to be exploited within appropriate policy and institutional regimes. The threat to biodiversity is manifest in Africa given the modernization and the demands for urbanization and industrialization. In recent years, invasive alien species have also become a problem in African countries. Given that most African countries have developed their national biodiversity strategies, there is a need for these countries to implement these strategies and to empower institutions to carry out their fimctions effectively. 

In order to set the stage for this two-volume book, this Chapter provides an introduction into the molecular basis of disease. We then continue to discuss modern biological techniques with which we have recently been empowered to screen for molecular drugs targets as well as for the drugs themselves. The Chapter finishes with an overview over the field of bioinformatics as it is covered in the two volumes of this book.

Thus planning for paperless operations today poses the challenge of empowering operators with a much better insight to the process, the required operational sequence and the related information than would ever be possible in the paper-based world. Computers can make use of information resources and description methods other than the traditional text to bypass many of the previously mentioned problems of instruction through written procedures. Modern computer systems not only streamline the information flow but also improve the understanding and quality of operations to be executed. Trend displays may provide an overview that no paper-based system comes close to, and embedded video clips may describe operations in a way that even the best written procedure could never achieve. The first two volumes of this series have treated Computational tools at different scales and Experimental techniques that can empower Modern Drying Technology with the aim of producing superior products with better processes. Now, it is time to turn from the means to the goal, treating "Product quality and formulation in Volume 3. This emphasis on the product is deliberate, because even the most efficient process is not of real value, if not able to fulfill - if not push - the requirements of the market.
