Mercury REs are formed with mercury in its purified, liquid form, along with a sparingly soluble mercury salt (i.e., mercury(l) chloride, mercury(l) sulfate, or mercury(II) oxide). Because mercury is easy to purify through distillation, it is easy to reuse and forms a consistent surface, adding to the ability to create REs repeatedly. Due to environmental concerns, mercury electrodes are less favored today. Two modem styles of mercury REs are shown in Figure 4.10.

The Congress met in the Standehaus, the home of the parliament of the Grand Duchy of Baden, courtesy of the Archduke. That building is no longer in existenee however, its modem replacement evokes the style of the old one. (Figure 10 shows exterior views of the old Standehaus (above) and the new one (below).) The new Standehaus contains photos, displays, and other records of the original. 

This Section H is dedicated to Professor Marvin Tung who passed away during the development of this manual. Marvin was a main contributor to Chapter H2. / have always considered Marvin as one of the principal researchers and teachers of modem food rheology. His contributions to food rheology research are evident in the literature. And to those of us who had the pleasure to know him, his special style of teaching and mentoring will be greatly missed. 

Nice introduction to the basics of quantum chemistry, then a focus on semiem-pirical calculations and perturbation methods. Although published more than 40 years ago, the fundamentals, like the Schrodinger equation and wavefunctions, remain true, and the engagingly assertive style of the doyen of modem semiempiri-cal methods makes this book worth reading.
