Mobile technologies availability advantages

Mobile phases used with this stationary phase are typically 0.01 N perchloric acid with small amounts of methanol or acetonitrile. One significant advantage of these phases is that both configurations of the chiral stationary phase are commercially available and can be obtained from J. T. Baker Inc. and Chiral Technologies, Inc. (Crownpak CR). 

Among the advantages of the Earth Tech treatment system are its mobility and its suitability for on-site treatment of petroleum hydrocarbon contaminants. The technology was formerly commercially available, but Earth Tech no longer offers it for remediation purposes. 

The first two points represent a general motivation for miniaturization in separation science independent of the actual fabrication technology. The benefit of a reduction of the consumption of sample, reagents, and mobile phase in chemical and biochemical analysis is self-evident and does not need to be discussed further (reduced consumption of precious samples and reagents, reduced amounts of waste, environmental aspects). This advantage is, however, sharply contrasted by its severe implications on the detection side, as discussed elsewhere in this volume in detail. The detection of the separated zones of very small sample volumes critically depends on the availability of highly sensitive detection methods. It is not surprising that extremely sensitive laser-induced-fluorescence (LIF) has been the mostly used detection principle for chip-based separation systems so far. 

This book provides an introduction to the nature, occurrence, physical properties, propagation, and uses of surfactants in the petroleum industry. The primary focus is on applications of the principles of colloid and interface science to surfactant applications in the petroleum industry, and includes attention to practical processes and problems. Books available up to now are either principally theoretical (such as the colloid chemistry texts), much more general (like Rosen s Surfactants and Interfacial Phenomena, Myers Surfactant Science and Technology, or Mittal s Solution Chemistry of Surfactants), or else much narrower in scope (like Smith s Surfactant Based Mobility Control). The applications of surfactants in the petroleum industry area are quite diverse and have a great practical importance. The area contains a number of problems of more fundamental interest as well. Surfactants may be applied to advantage in many parts of the petroleum production process in reservoirs, in oilwells, in surface processing operations, and in environmental, health, and safety applications. In each case appropriate knowledge and practices determine both the economic and technical successes of the industrial process concerned.
