The current situation reflects the significant advances made in toxicology since 1985 (Gad, 1996 and 2001). It is rare to see a pharmaceutical or device researched and developed with the use of other than an extensively commingled in vivo and in vitro test battery. This is reflected in the use of what may be termed a mixed test battery. The principles behind the development of these batteries are as follows. [Pg.648]

Care must be taken in preparing the standard solutions because a pure preparation of the test compound will not be subject to the same interference effects of a crude or mixed test sample. In flow-through tests, the treated water is continually replaced either by a constant flow or by additions of small volumes of treated water at 1-10 minute intervals. Various delivery systems have been designed to either supply measured amounts of newly mixed test concentrations or to add premixed solutions to the test chambers. Depending on the physical characteristics of the chemicals involved and the reliability or accuracy of the delivery systems, there is ample opportunity with this method for something to go wrong in the delivery of the test chemical.
