We have shown that a combination of four simple building blocks (i.e. monomers) and exclusively non-covalent interaction forces, achieved via the co-assembly of fully water-soluble double hydrophilic block copolymers, results in mixed micelles in aqueous solutions. The chemically unlike polymer chains in the micellar corona may give rise to various coronal microstructures, ranging from mixed to segregated, in either the radial or lateral direction, or in both. Hence, co-assembly of charged block copolymers can result in the spontaneous formation of reversible Janus micelles. [Pg.183]

Chemical reactions will take place only when the reactant molecules are in intimate contact. In some cases, especially with very fast reactions or viscous liquids, segregation of the reactants can exist, which make the reaction rates and selectivities dependent on the mixing intensity. Ion beams provide useful information either as a diagnostic tool or as a precision etching method in adhesion research. The combination ISS/SIMS method used along with other techniques such as SEM provides a powerful tool for elemental analysis of surface composition. These results, as well as earlier work in this laboratory, indicate that the surface composition can be significantly different from the bulk due to contamination, selective chemical etching and segregation. These same techniques also provide an analysis of the mode of failure in adhesive joints. Many failures classified as "adhesive" on the basis of visual inspection are frequently mixed mode failures or failures at a new interface containing elements of both adhesives and adherend. [Pg.138]
