Further down, ca 75 cm below the electrode tips, the mix is hot enough (2200—2500°C) to allow the lime to melt. The coke does not melt and the hquid lime percolates downward through the relatively fixed bed of coke forming calcium carbide, which is Hquid at this temperature. Both Hquids erode coke particles as they flow downward. The weak carbide first formed is converted to richer material by continued contact and reaction with coke particles. The carbon monoxide gas produced in this area must be released by flowing back up through the charge. The process continues down to the taphole level. Material in this area consists of soHd coke wetted in a pool of Hquid lime and Hquid calcium carbide at the furnace bottom. 

In pressing, the threshold concentration of the filler amounts to about 0.5% of volume. The resulting distribution of the filler corresponds, apparently, to the model of mixing of spherical particles of the polymer (with radius Rp) and filler (with radius Rm) for Rp > Rm as the size of carbon black particles is usually about 1000 A [19]. During this mixing, the filler, because of electrostatical interaction, is distributed mainly on the surface of polymer particles which facilitates the forming of conducting chains and entails low values of the percolation threshold. 

The solid phase used in this extraction is a weak ion exchanger and the material is preconditioned with a wash of 0.5 ml of 0.5M phosphoric acid followed by 1 ml of deionized water. A volume of 0.5 ml of the serum containing the tricyclic antidepressant drug standards is mixed with 0.5 ml of deionized water and allowed to percolate slowly through the packing. 

One milliliter of the filtered com meal extract was mixed with 4 ml of the 0.5 % acetic acid solution and allowed to percolate through the cartridge. 

Organic acid fluorescence. In a similar manner to trace constituents, such as Mg, Sr and P, concentrations of organic acids present in speleothem calcite are sufficient to observe variation at temporal scales of less than annual in some cases (e.g.. Baker et al. 1993, Shopov et al. 1994). Organic acids (humic and fulvic) are formed in the soil by humification, and transported to the cave void by percolating waters where they are entrapped in precipitating carbonates. Under certain circumstances, where precipitation patterns are strongly seasonal and the nature of vadose percolation is such that seasonal mixing is incomplete, bands with different luminescent intensities can be differentiated after excitation with UV radiation. Patterson s friend Edward D. Goldberg at the Scripps Institution of Oceanography in La Jolla, California, had tipped him off that one of the best records of the world s climate is embedded in thin layers of glacial ice at high altitudes or near the poles. Drug particle size can also be a factor in mixing uniformity. When particles of different sizes are mixed, the smaller particles tend to travel or percolate downward. This tendency is a particular problem with low-dose drugs, where a small amount of drug is to be mixed with large amounts of diluents. Catalytic activity and electrochemical performance generally increase as the NiO and YSZ particle sizes are reduced. However, ultrafine powders are prone to agglomeration during the milling and mixing process the distributions of the phases (and hence the percolation threshold and many other important properties) are determined by the agglomeration size, not by the primary particle size.
