Pot lives of DETA and TETA adhesives are on the order of 20 to 30 min at room temperature. When mixed with DGEBA epoxy resins in large batches, the exotherm can be significant due to the reactivity. This generally limits the amount of mixed adhesive that can be prepared at one time, and it also limits the amount (mass) of adhesive that can be applied to a joint [although often thin bond line and the thermal conductivity of the substrate (e.g., metals) will diminish exotherm effects]. 

Short working life of mixed adhesive that can result in waste, difficult application... 

A fast-curing polymercaptan-epoxy adhesive formulation is shown in Table 11.11. The gel time for the mixed adhesive is about 8 min at room temperature. Tensile shear strength on aluminum is reported to be 2270 psi at 23°C. Note that the different color pigments used in parts A (carbon black) and B (titanium dioxide) are to assist by visually indicating when the two components are well mixed. 

The waterborne emulsion is formulated so that the mixed adhesive can be easily cleaned with water, yet it provides good water resistance properties of a conventional epoxy adhesive. Bond strength of these adhesives on new concrete is greater than the strength of the concrete itself. 

The most commonly used tests for properties of the materials used in epoxy adhesive formulation and uncured mixed adhesives are viscosity, shelf life, percent of solids, and moisture content. These are generally applied to the resinous components. 

While dental hygienists clean teeth, dental assistants work directly with the dentist. They prepare and sterilize instruments, remove sutures, mix adhesives, prepare fillings, make casts of teeth, and create temporary crowns. 

The mixed adhesive discharges at the front end of the mixing tube. To be able to process adhesives in this way, adhesive manufacturers offer the components A and B in two separate cartridges, from which activated feeding plungers press them into the mixing tube, where they are then mixed (Figure 7.12).

The pull-off test for measuring adhesion is described in ISO4624. Adhesion is assessed by measuring the minimum tensile stress necessary to detach or to rupture the coating in a direction perpendicular to the substrate. The result gives the minimum tensile stress required to break the weakest interface (adhesive failure) or the weakest compound (cohesive failure) of the test assembly. Mixed adhesive-cohesive failure may also occur. 

Component B is prepared as follows To 100 parts of component A, add 4 parts of a 10% solution of a dithiocarbamate accelerator. The mixed adhesive will vulcanize at room temperature or at a higher temperature, if required. Typical vulcanizing time at room... 

Evidently, with such a complex interaction, the particles can form several types of aggregates with different and mixed adhesion values. The ratio of doublets to singlets in the nth minimum at equilibrium is given by... 

Diluents. These are generally incorporated to reduce the viseosity of the freshly mixed adhesive to offset the effect of the filler. This may be required to improve handling and spreading characteristics or to allow filler additions which tend to reduce cost. Other properties of the fresh and hardened adhesive can be affected by the use of diluents, for example pot life, flexibility and glass transition temperature. If the diluent is non-reactive, such as solvents which remain in the cured system, the net result is a deterioration of chemical and mechanical properties such as increased shrinkage and reduced adhesion. Reactive diluents containing epoxy compounds are capable of combining chemically with the resin/hardener system. 

It may be useful to monitor the unreacted components of the adhesive system as well as the properties of the freshly mixed adhesive, partly as a check on the adhesive supplier and partly to establish the working characteristics of the adhesive. Techniques for... 

Usable life. The usable life of the mixed adhesive before application to the substrate should be not less than 40 minutes at 20 "C that is, the viscosity should not rise above 150 Pa within this time.

The adhesive metering and mixing operation should be monitored by periodically sampling the mixed adhesive and testing it for adhesive properties. A visual inspection can also be made for air entrapment and degree of mixing. The quality-control engineer should be sure that the oldest adhesive is used first and that the specified shelf fife has not been exceeded. 

These materials are probably best bonded with acrylic-based toughened adhesives. Both the adhesive and its associated initiator, in their liquid forms, are likely to cause stress cracking in prolonged contact with the acrylic face. These adherends should therefore be bonded using pre-mixed adhesive/initiator if at all practical. Joints based on the acrylic face should never be used for structural assembly work.
