Minimal coarseness

In this chapter, we have discussed computational approaches for describing the equilibrium properties of multicomponent polymer melts. The universal behavior of dense multicomponent systems permits the use of minimal, coarse-grained models that parameterize the relevant interactions via a small number of invariants or coarsegrained parameters. Re. >tN, /N, and Both partide-based models and field-theoretic representations have been devised to describe these universal properties. [Pg.239]

Length and Energy Scales of Minimal, Coarse-Grained Models for Polymer--Solid Contacts... [Pg.14]

The idea of a minimal coarse-grained model for polymer-solid contacts consists in not describing the structural details of the polymer-solid contact on the length scale of Angstroms because this length scale is not resolved. Instead, the aim is to tailor the interactions at the surface in order to match the difference in surface tension, Ay, of the coarse-grained model to the experimental data. In this way, the macroscopic interfacial thermodynamics is parameterized. [Pg.17]

AU processed material is screened to return the coarse fraction for a second pass through the system. Process feed rates are matched to operating variables such as rpm speed and internal clearances, thus minimizing the level of excess fines (—200 mesh (<0.075 mm mm)). At one installation (3) the foUowing product size gradation of total smaller than mesh size (cumulative minus) was obtained ... [Pg.569]

The pressure drop through a settling chamber is small, consisting primarily of entrance and exit losses. Because low gas velocities are used, the chamber is not subject to abrasion and may therefore be used as a precleaner to remove very coarse particles and thus minimize abrasion on subsequent equipment. [Pg.1585]

Fiber-Bed Scrubbers Fibrous-bed structures are sometimes used as gas-liquid contactors, with cocnrrent flow of the gas and hqnid streams. In such contactors, both scrubbing (particle deposition on droplets) and filtration (particle deposition on fibers) may take place. If only mists are to be collected, small fibers may be used, but if solid particles are present, the use of fiber beds is limited by the tendency of the beds to phig. For dnst-cohectiou service, the fiber bed must be composed of coarse fibers and have a high void fraction, so as to minimize the tendency to plug. The fiber bed may be made from metal or... [Pg.1596]

In this case, the "fine" partieles and the "coarse" particles were separated so that the difference in size between individual pcurticles was minimized. That is, most of the Individual partieles in each fraction were almost the same size. Both the fine and coarse particles have a sintering slope of 1/2 but it is the coarse particles which sinter to form a solid having a density closest to... [Pg.194]

The larger is the value of Sy, the stronger is the mutual synergistic interaction between the coarse and fine particles. Also, an effective fine particle additive to improve the fluidizing characteristics of coarse particles calls for a large value of m produced with minimal amount of the fine material, that is, a small value of x2. [Pg.569]

Secondly, we might mention that there are two possible attitudes to a theory of valence based on the AO expansion method. The chemist uses the electron-pair model essentially as one of his axioms or, at least, as a good working hypothesis. This model is extremely familiar and useful any theory of such a model of valence should be capable of providing at least some foundation for and extension of his qualitative concepts. To the physicist, however, the simplest molecules are quite complex many-particle systems and he would perhaps find it surprising if we are able to obtain any useful results from our coarse-grained minimal basis model in view of the complexity of the interactions involved. We must try to balance these views in any evalution we make. [Pg.83]

In all, 11 vertical soil vapor extraction wells and 9 vertical air sparge wells were installed in the treatment area. Sand chimneys (boreholes filled with coarse sand) were also installed to facilitate vertical air circulation. Mechanical remediation equipment and systems control installed for remediation were mosdy automated with minimal operator control required. [Pg.347]

Flow can one make practical use of these observations For some time I have advocated the use of information theory. (For more details see introductory discussions in Refs. [1] and [3], surprisal analysis in Ref. [23], applications to spectra in Refs. [24] and [30], and a recent prediction of a phase transition induced by cluster impact in Ref. [31]). What this approach seeks to do is to use the minimal dynamical input that is necessary to account for the dynamical observations of interest, the point being that one very rarely has the experimental resolution to probe the individual final quantum states. The information measured is much more coarse grained. [Pg.214]
