Mine Welsh

Reverberatory furnaces were constructed by Lambert in Chile in 1842, and the first blast furnace was erected by him in that country in 1857. So successful was the development of this enterprise, that Chile became the world s largest producer in the years 1861 to 1870, and furnished about half the total output. The decline of the Welsh industry dates from this period, and also the development of the manufacture in the United States of America, Calumet, in the Lake Superior district, becoming an important centre. The next decade is noted for the inception of copper-mining in Spain and Portugal, the chief centres being the Andalusian, San Domingo, Tharsis, and Rio Tinto mines. 

The Welsh Chronicle, sometimes csAqA Annales Cambriae, refers to a region in Wales near St David s or Mnyw (Menevia) as St. David s Moni ludeorum. This may identify the area as a tin mining settlement of the Israelite tribe of Judah.

As long ago as 1952, Bradshaw [256J reported that root growth was inhibited when plants of Agrostis tenuis were grown in soil from the tip of an old Welsh lead mine, while plants originally growing on the tip produced normal roots. 

Donetsk is a coal-mining town founded by a Welsh businessman in 1869 who extracted wealth from the region via steel making and coal mining. Donetsk is located in southeastern Ukraine near the Russian border. Russian, rather than Ukrainian, is the language spoken here. It is slowly changing... 

There was also evidence from the natural world that seemed to support the supposition that continually ingesting small amounts of lead could adversely affect reproductive health. An early-twentieth-century study by E. Morgan examined the pregnancy outcomes of sheep from a Welsh area dominated by lead mining. In Wales alone a Welsh Office survey carried out in 1998 identified 750 problem sites covering 5000 hectares as well as 1200 former landfill sites and 1300 abandoned metal mine sites.
