Milled grass

Place 5 g dried and milled grass into a Soxhlet extractor. Perform sequential extraction with water, 95% ethanol, chloroform and acetone. Extraction with each solvent should be for 8 h at a reflux rate of approximately 8 cycles/h. The extracts should be dried in a vacuum oven at 40°C for 48 h and conditioned in a vacuum desiccator over P2O5 overnight for further analysis. The total amount of extractables is determined by the difference in sample weight before and after the extractions.

The effect of applied plant residues can be positively influenced by an increase of temperature. Mallek et al. (2007) established that dried and milled crop residues of onion (Allium cepa L.) or garlic (A. sativum L.) were able to reduce seed germination of barnyard grass (E. crus-galli (L.) R Beauv.), common purslane (Portulaca oleracea L.), london rocket (Sisymbrium irio L.) during their decomposition in soil, but only at the elevated (39°C) soil temperature. It can support combination of methods for weed control, in this case allelopathy with soil heating treatments (e.g., solarization).

The caryopses of grasses and cereals are anatomically complex. The starch endosperm of the caryopsis is surrounded by the aleurone layer and pericarp, both of which can be partly or completely removed, along with the embryo, by the abrasive process known as pearling, which removes the bran. The flour obtained by milling a pearled grain consists of protein, starches, and a low proportion of endospermic hemicellulose and non-endospermic hemicellulose from the bran.

The production of methyl formate by carbonylation of methanol with basic catalysts [134] can be used to separate carbon monoxide from by-product synthesis gas streams, e.g., steel-mill off-gases [135], to generate clean sources of CO for production of acetic acid by methyl formate isomerization. Therefore methyl formate could be produced near cheap CO sources and then transported to an appropriate site for conversion to acetic acid. This route to acetic acid is potentially competitive with a classic grass-roots methanol carbonylation process. Though the process has not been commercialized, numerous companies have patented the isomerization of methyl formate [136].
