Microorganisms properties

G.S. Sayler and G. Stacey. 1986. Methods for Evaluation of Microorganism Properties. In Biotechnology Risk Assessment (J.R. Fiksel and V.T. Covello eds.) Pergamon Press, N.Y. [Pg.31]

Other Properties. Polyester fibers have good resistance to uv radiation although prolonged exposure weakens the fibers (47,51). PET is not affected by iasects or microorganisms and can be designed to kill bacteria by the iacorporation of antimicrobial agents (19). The oleophilic surface of PET fibers attracts and holds oils. Other PET fiber properties can be found ia the Hterature (47,49). [Pg.327]

Most plasmids are topologically closed circles of DNA. They can be separated from the bulk of the chromosomal DNA by virtue of their resistance to alkaline solution. The double-stranded stmcture of DNA is denatured at high pH, but because the two strands of the plasmid are topologically joined they are more readily renatured. This property is exploited in rapid procedures for the isolation of plasmid DNA from recombinant microorganisms (5,6). [Pg.229]

Contraction in the number of EPA-allowed biocides has heightened efforts to develop naturally derived preservatives and microorganisms capable of countering microbial degradation. Neem oil A. dirachta indica seed extract) has been featured as an exceptional natural candidate for the preservation of cosmetic products. Naturally derived chemicals with antimicrobial properties have been used since antiquity as preservatives. However, displacement of successhil synthetic products by natural products in preservatives of any category remains to be witnessed. [Pg.93]

The rate and extent of pesticide metaboHsm can vary dramatically, depending on chemical stmcture, the number of specific pesticide-degrading microorganisms present and their affinity for the pesticide, and environmental parameters. The extent of metaboHsm can vary from relatively minor transformations which do not significantly alter the chemical or toxicological properties of the pesticide, to mineralisation, ie, degradation to CO2, H2O, NH" 4, Cf, etc. The rate of metaboHsm can vary from extremely slow (half-life of years) to rapid (half-life of days). [Pg.215]

Germicidal Properties. The germicidal activity of aqueous chlorine is attributed primarily to HOCl. Although the detailed mechanism by which HOCl kills bacteria and other microorganisms has not been estabUshed, sufficient experimental evidence has been obtained to suggest strongly that the mode of action involves penetration of the cell wall followed by reaction with the enzymatic system. The efficiency of destmction is affected by temperature, time of contact, pH, and type and concentration of organisms (177). [Pg.470]

Beyond the simple resistance of a material of construction to dissolution in a given chemical, many other properties enter into consideration when makiug an appropriate or optimum MOC selection for a given environmental exposure. These factors include the influence of velocity, impurities or contaminants, pH, stress, crevices, bimetallic couples, levels of nuclear, UV, or IB radiation, microorganisms, temperature heat flux, stray currents, properties associatea with original production of the material and its subsequent fabrication as an item of equipment, as well as other physical ana mechanical properties of the MOC, the Proverbial Siebert Changes in the Phase of the Moon, and so forth. [Pg.2442]

The immune system in vertebrates provides a defense mechanism against foreign parasites such as viruses and bacteria. Three main properties are essential to its successful operation specific recognition of foreign molecules, the ability to destroy the foreign parasite, and a memory mechanism that allows a more rapid response to a second infection by the same microorganism. [Pg.299]

Perhaps you are a health science major, looking forward to a career in medicine or pharmacy. If so, you will want to become familiar with the properties of aqueous solutions (Chapters 4,10,14, and 16), which include blood and other body fluids. Chemists today are involved in the synthesis of a variety of life-saving products. These range from drugs used in chemotherapy (Chapter 15) to new antibiotics used against resistant microorganisms. [Pg.2]

Biological factors Microorganisms, fungi, bacteria, animals, insects can destroy materials or change their properties... [Pg.402]

Aquaporins are central players in mammalian physiology, but are also important in microorganisms and plants. The number of AQPs in plants is quite high angiosperms species, for example, express approximately 35 different AQPs divided into four families on the basis of their sequence. Moreover, plant AQPs might be considered multifunctional channels for their different transport properties. [Pg.213]
