Microdomain formation

The Structural rearrangements accompanying the redox phenomena sometimes lead to a texture of the sample consisting wholly of microdomains, which may be of varying size and composition. The superstructures observed depend upon local composition, while their orientation within each microdomain may be randomly distributed. As the domains are usually smaller than the sampling size ( 500 A) of X-ray and neutron diffraction, such investigations require the use of high resolution transmission electron microscopy and electron diffraction. [Pg.498]

As an example, we briefly describe here the observations made for Laj. Cax-Fe03. In this solid solution system, a single perovskite-brownmillerite intergrowth structure ( = 3) is foimd at composition x = % [224]. The intergrowth structure exhibits ideal stoichiometry, i.e. LaCa2Fe30g, at reduced oxygen partial pressures near the minimum observed in the electrical conductivity [199]. For any other composition, a disordered intergrowth is observed. [Pg.498]

As the specific properties of block copolymers are related to the formation of microdomains, the present review will deal with the shape, size, and arrangements of microdomains in block copolymer systems. The phenomenon of phase separation and of microdomains formation is not restricted to dry copolymers, but is also a characteristic feature of their concentrated solutions, where mesophases are observed11, and, therefore, we shall generally consider systems copolymer/solvent and treat dry copolymers as their limiting case. [Pg.87]

The basic driving force for microdomain formation in block copolymers is the reduction in the positive surface free energy of the system resulting from the increase of the domain size. This domain size increase gives rise to a decrease in the volume fraction of interfacial region in which junction points of the copolymers must be distributed. In addition, configurations of the block chains must also change in order to even-up the density deficiency in the interior of the domains. [Pg.190]

Helfand (45,46) used a mean field approach to treat the problem of microdomain formation (Figure 7). For a diblock copolymer with a high degree of polymerization, the following free-energy expression can be written (46) ... [Pg.190]

It is the purpose of this review to demonstrate with selected examples supramolecular aspects in macromolecular chemistry, microdomain formation and long-range interactions in macromolecular systems as a means of extending the length scale of supramolecular chemistry, and finally a number of recent developments will be discussed where concepts from macromolecular chemistry and supramolecular chemistry have been combined. This is a rapidly growing field and so the selection we have made is necessarily incomplete. [Pg.90]

Further, for microdomain formation studies fluorescence labeled sialyl Lewis X [133], for cluster effect studies dimeric sialyl Lewis X [134], and for carbohydrate-carbohydrate recognition studies a dimer of Lewis X [135] were synthesized (O Scheme 20, 20k). To this aim. [Pg.483]

As distinct from sohd supports such as gold or silver, mercury imparts lateral mobihty to hpid monolayers directly self-assembled on its surface, because of its liquid state. This is demonstrated by rapid spontaneous phase separation, with microdomain formation, in a hpid mixture monolayer self-assembled on top of a DPTL thiolipid monolayer tethered to a mercury microelectrode [30]. The presence of microdomains was directly verified from the images of the distal hpid monolayer obtained using two-photon fluorescence lifetime imaging microscopy. [Pg.201]

In reality materials have a partial segregation of the vacancies, so that the solid contains alternating La-rich and La-poor layers. This means that Li conductivity is more akin to a two-dimensional process. Moreover, the segregation of the vacancies leads to microdomain formation and the presence of antiphase boundaries in the material, which may interfere with ionic conductivity, although in thin films of Lij Laj/j. TiOj it has been found that that these structural features have only a small influence on the magnitude of the Li ion conductivity. [Pg.161]

The increasing importance of block copolymers arises mainly from their unique properties in solution and in the solid state, which is a consequence of their molecular structure. In particular, sequences of different chemical composition are usually incompatible and therefore have a tendency to phase segregate. The microdomain formation process in the solid state is directly related to the specific molecular... [Pg.356]
