Micelle sensitized

HTAB has been used, on the one hand, to increase the CL intensity of the reaction of 2,6,7-trihydroxy-9-(4 chlorophenyl)-3-fluorene with hydrogen peroxide in alkaline solution, in the presence of traces of Co(II) as a catalyst [43]. As a consequence, a CL method has been established for determination of ultratraces of Co(II). On the other hand, HTAB micelles sensitize the CL oxidation of pyro-gallol with A-bromosuccimide in an alkaline medium [44], while anionic and nonionic surfactants inhibit the CL intensity of this reaction (Table 3). This sensitized process allows the determination of pyrogallol by flow injection in an interval of 5 X 10 7-3 X 10 5 M. [Pg.300]

Surfactants have also been of interest for their ability to support reactions in normally inhospitable environments. Reactions such as hydrolysis, aminolysis, solvolysis, and, in inorganic chemistry, of aquation of complex ions, may be retarded, accelerated, or differently sensitive to catalysts relative to the behavior in ordinary solutions (see Refs. 205 and 206 for reviews). The acid-base chemistry in micellar solutions has been investigated by Drummond and co-workers [207]. A useful model has been the pseudophase model [206-209] in which reactants are either in solution or solubilized in micelles and partition between the two as though two distinct phases were involved. In inverse micelles in nonpolar media, water is concentrated in the micellar core and reactions in the micelle may be greatly accelerated [206, 210]. The confining environment of a solubilized reactant may lead to stereochemical consequences as in photodimerization reactions in micelles [211] or vesicles [212] or in the generation of radical pairs [213]. [Pg.484]

The concentration at which micellization commences is called the critical micelle concentration, erne. Any experimental teclmique sensitive to a solution property modified by micellization or sensitive to some probe (molecule or ion) property modified by micellization is generally adequate to quantitatively estimate the onset of micellization. The detennination of erne is usually done by plotting the experimentally measured property or response as a hmction of the logarithm of the surfactant concentration. The intersection of asymptotes fitted to the experimental data or as a breakpoint in the experimental data denotes the erne. A partial listing of experimental... [Pg.2580]

In addition to their poor solubility in water, alkyl phosphate esters and dialkyl phosphate esters are further characterized by sensitivity to water hardness [37]. A review of the preparation, properties, and uses of surface-active anionic phosphate esters prepared by the reactions of alcohols or ethoxylates with tetra-phosphoric acid or P4O10 is given in Ref. 3. The surfactant properties of alkyl phosphates have been investigated [18,186-188]. The critical micelle concentration (CMC) of the monoalkyl ester salts is only moderate see Table 6 ... [Pg.591]

We may contrast this behavior to that found for AOT. As shown in Figure 1, the chromatograms for AOT exhibit sharp fronts and somewhat diffuse tails, intermediate in shape between the symmetrical peaks typical of conventional solutes and the highly asymmetric chromatograms obtained for sodium dodecyl sulfate micelles in water (15). In addition, the concentration dependence of Mp" for AOT is gradual, not abrupt as for lecithin. These differences may be attributed to the lability of the AOT micelles which makes the observed retention time quite sensitive to the initial concentration (12) and leads to broadened chromatograms. [Pg.236]

The photophysical properties of magnesium(II) tetra-(i-butyl)phthalocyanine (27) have been studied in solution, in micelles and in liposomes cation radical formation (CBr4 as electron acceptor) has been detected with UV excitation, or by a two-photon excitation using a pulsed laser in the therapeutic window at 670 nm.118 The Mg11 complex of octa(tri-z -propylsilylethy-nyl)tetra[6,7]quinoxalinoporphyrazine (28) has been prepared as a potential PDT sensitizer. The synthesis is shown in Figure 8. Compound (28) has Amax 770 nm (e = 512,000 M-1 cm-1), d>f = 0.46 and d>A = 0.19 (all in THF, under air).119... [Pg.969]

Other cationic surfactants such as TTAB, DTAB, DODAB, STAC, CEDAB, and DDDAB have been used in CL reactions with less frequency. Thus, tetradecyltrimethylammonium bromide [TTAB] has been used to increase the sensitivity of the method to determine Fe(II) and total Fe based on the catalytic action of Fe(II) in the oxidation of luminol with hydrogen peroxide in an alkaline medium [47], While other surfactants such as HTAB, hexadecylpiridinium bromide (HPB), Brij-35, and SDS do not enhance the CL intensity, TTAB shows a maximum enhancement at a concentration of 2.7 X 10 2 M (Fig. 11). At the same time it was found that the catalytic effect of Fe(II) is extremely efficient in the presence of citric acid. With regard to the mechanism of the reaction, it is thought that Fe(II) forms an anionic complex with citric acid, being later concentrated on the surface of the TTAB cationic micelle. The complex reacts with the hydrogen peroxide to form hydroxy radical or superoxide ion on the... [Pg.302]

Sukhan has used PTAB cationic micelles to enhance the CL reaction of 4-diethylaminophthalohydrazide with oxygen and Co(II) in the presence of fluorescein as sensitizer [48], This enhancement is mainly due to electron-excited energy transfer from the donor (4-diethylaminophthalohydrazide) to the acceptor (fluorescein). The addition of fluorescein combined with the presence of PTAB reduces the detection limit of Co(II) by a factor of 6. The method was successfully applied in the determination of Co in tap water samples. [Pg.303]

As mentioned earlier, reversed micelles have different properties from normal micelles. These properties have the potential to favorably affect the sensitivity and other analytical aspects of CL reactions. Thus, reversed micelles have been used to prolong the duration of the observed CL of various oxalate ester (or acid)-hydrogen peroxide-sensitizer reaction systems for application as chemical light sources [62],... [Pg.306]

I luorophorcs having lower oxidation potentials also enhance the PO-CL reaction. The addition of these compounds to the postcolumn reagent is very effective so as to increase the sensitivity. The attempt to enhance CL intensity using micelles of surfactants has also been reported [33], but it has yet not been applied to HPLC. [Pg.403]
