A method for the determination of 11 OPPs in a water sample involved SPE followed by LC-ISP-MS and was developed with a limit of detection between 0.01 and 0.2 tg/L (88). The authors observed that ISP spectra display diagnostic ions of OPPs, which could be used for the identification of unknowns. Comparison of LC-ISP-MS with TSP-MS analysis of the same compounds showed that ISP is to be preferred It has about 100-fold better sensitivity, and the thermal degradation of trichlorfon observed with TSP was not found with ISP. Liquid chromatography-ISP-MS is sometimes better when it comes to distinguishing isomers like trans- and m-mevinphos, which is difficult to do under current LC-DAD conditions owing to the poor chro-mophore of cw-mevinphos. 

Mevinphos [7786-34-7], 0,0-dimetliyl 0-(2-methoxycarbonyl-l-methylvmyl) phosphate, (CH30)2P(0)C(CH3)=CHC(0)0CH3 (bp 106—107°C at 0.13 kPa, d 1.25, vp 0.38 Pa at 21°C), is a mixture of one part cis and two parts trans isomers, of which the cis isomer is about 10-fold more effective. It is miscible with water and rat LD5Qs are 6.1, 3.7 (oral) and 4.7,4.2 (dermal) mg/kg. Mevinphos is a nonpersistent systemic insecticide suitable for the treatment of edible produce dose to harvest, because of rapid dissipation of the residue by hydrolysis and volatilization.

Chemical/Physical. The reported hydrolysis half-lives of cw-mevinphos and trans-mevinphos at pH 11.6 are 1.8 and 3.0 hours, respectively (Casida et al., 1956). The volatility half-lives for the cis and trans forms at 28°C were 21 and 24 hours, respectively (Casida et al., 1956). Worthing and Hance (1991) reported that at pH values of 6, 7, 9 and 11, the hydrolysis half-lives were 120 days, 35 days, 3.0 days and 1.4 hours, respectively (Worthing and Hance, 1991).
