2-Methylresorcinol

A conduction of a reaction under parallel flow in microreactor system was also demonstrated by Kitamori et al. where high conversions were achieved for phase-transfer catalyzed reactions [214]. With the use of a glass microchip, the reaction ofp-nitrobenzene diazonium tetrafluoroborate in water and in ethyl acetate took place in the aqueous layer after rapid phase transfer of 5-methylresorcinol used in excess. Not only higher yields than a conventional reaction in a flask were observed as a result of the large specific interfacial area in the microreactor but also no side products could be detected by fast removal of the main product from the aqueous to the organic phase. The separation of the two phases was easily achieved by splitting the reaction channel into two channels at the end (Figure 4.22).

The mass spectra and pyrolysis of alkyl resorcinols are also subject to nonquantitative correlations. 3 > Lille and Kundel reported that the mass spectra of 2, 4 and 5 alkyl (C4 or larger) resorcinols were all dominated by jS-cleavage (benzylic) ions. The pyrolysis of the 2 or 4 alkylresorcinols at 700 °C was consistent with their mass spectra however, pyrolysis of 5-alkylresorcinols gave in addition to the anticipated / -cleavage products, 5,7-dihydroxyindene or an alkenylresorcinol. The yield of the unique olefin was of the same order as the peld of the 5-methylresorcinol. The basis for this reactivity discrepancy may be the scrambling of positions in the resorcinol on electron impact.

Methylresorcinol monomethylether (orcinol monomethylether) has been synthesised in 71% yield from 3-methylcyclobut-2-enone (2.5 moles) and 2-methoxyacetylene (1-1.2 moles) in the presence of 2,4,6-tri-tert-butylphenol (1.1 moles) by heating the mixture in a sealed tube at 80°C for 26 hours followed by treatment of the crude product with hot 10% methanolic potassium hydroxide during several hours (ref. 15).

The aim of this chapter is to study the effect of MR on the surface activity of lysozyme and rheological properties of its adsorption layers at the air/solution (0.05 M phosphate buffer, pH 6.0) interface.
