The absolute detection limit for manganese was 8-22pg for various organomanganese compounds including methyl cyclopentadienyl manganese tricarbonyl. 

The method is suitable for the determination of Mn, present as methyl-cyclopentadienyl manganese tricarbonyl, in gasoline in the range 0.5— 40/igml 1. The sample is reacted with bromine then diluted with MIBK and the standards prepared in a similar manner. This ensures an equal response from the Mn species in both sample and standard solutions.

An early organometallic molecule, tetraethyl lead, which was first made in Zurich by Lowig [80], was widely used for a period of time as a fuel addihve, unhl recognition of its effects on the environment and its implicahon in cases of environmental poisoning led to its prohibition [81]. The toxicology of (ri -methyl-cyclopentadienyl) manganese tricarbonyl (MMT) has also been studied it is a permissible fuel additive in some jurisdictions in North America. 

Alternative additives include methanol and methyl cyclopentadienyl-manganese tricarbonyl (MMT) which have been thoroughly discussed elsewhere (Moran 1975, SMD 1976). 

Among the latest additives (1957) are methyl cyclopentadienyl manganese tricarbonyl of the Ethyl Corporation, and an organic boron compound of the Standard Oil Company of Ohio. The boron compound in small amounts (0.008—0.03 per cent) not only reduces combustion-zone deposits and surface ignition but also increases the effectiveness of tetraethyllead. Antiknock effects are greatest with leaded straight-run or A[Pg.38]

Recently a manganese tricarbonyl compound, commonly known as methyl-cyclopentadienyl memganese tricarbonyl (MMT), has been added to various fuels to improve combustion and as an octane improver in automobile gasolines. Thus release of manganese into the biosphere as a result of various human activities, has created great concern about possibly increasing health hazards fix)m this metal. 

Tricarbonyl(methylcyclopeiitadienyl)]nanganese, MeC5H4Mn(CO)3, is the only cyclopentadienyl to have found industrial application on a significant scale. It is used as an antiknock, mixed with tetra-methyl and -ethyl lead and their redistribution products, and in some ways its antiknock properties are complementary to those of the lead compounds. Its antiknock property is due to the ability of manganese oxides, produced in the combustion, to end radical chains by electron-transfejr processes (as PbO does). The methylcyclopentadienyl compound, which is liquid at room temperature, is preferred to ir-CsH5Mn(CO)3 (mp 77°) because liquids are more convenient to handle industrially than solids. It is also used as a combustion improver since it helps to reduce smoke.
