Methane from landfills

Binax A process for removing carbon dioxide from methane from landfill by washing with water absorption takes place under pressure and desorption is done by an air blast at atmospheric pressure. Piloted at a wastewater treatment plant at Modesto, CA, in 1978. 

Kryosol An adsorptive process for purifying methane from landfill gas. Operated at high pressure. The overall methane recovery is 90 to 95 percent. 

Ethanol can also be produced from "non-food" materials, such as garbage or wastewater sludge, which are "negative-cost" feedstocks. If all American wastes (industrial and municipal) were converted to biofuels, not only would some 50 to 100 million gallons of fuel be obtained, but the emission of methane from landfills and other wastes would also be eliminated. Plasma gasification, a commercially available process, can also simultaneously increase the fuel supply and reduce greenhouse gas emissions. 

Separex A membrane process for separating methane from landfill gas. 

The basic biological processes leading to the generation of methane from landfills have been well known for many years (Buswell and Mueller, 1952 Otieno, 1994 Reinhart, 1998).
