In order to avoid this undesirable effect and to promote metal ion accumulation in the liquid phase, Ryss and Goldberg (1973) developed a special element-collector. This consists of a vessel containing a metallic electrode and a semi-permeable membrane, on one side of which is a solution of nitric acid (Fig. 2-17). The semi-permeable membrane prevents egress of the acid solution and allows ionic exchange between the element-collector and the surrounding environment. Inter-group differences in ionicity among the solids are a function of the electron affinity of the anions which increase in the order NCS intra-group variations depend to a large degree on the ionization potentials of the metal ions. The structural parameters which will be considered below together with a discussion of phase transformations have been determined by diffraction and vibrational spectroscopic methods. Structural information on some of these materials is available only from infrared spectroscopic data. At the National Institute of Chemistry (NIC), in the frame of CMD subproject of EUROTRAC-2, experimental studies of the role of soluble constituents of atmospheric aerosols in the aqueous-phase autoxidation mechanisms of S(IV) was studied. The research focused on atmospheric water droplets (clouds, fog), where soluble constituents of atmospheric particles may be important in aqueous SO2 oxidation under non-photochemical conditions. In the frame of CMD project laboratory experiments in a semi-batch continuous stirred tank reactor under controlled conditions (T, air flow rate, stirring), were made in order to study the autoxidation of S(IV)-oxides catalyzed by transition metal ions (Fe(III), Fe(II), Co(II), Cu(II), Ni(II), Mn(II)). These studies were carried out at the National Institute of Chemistry. [Pg.331]

The tw o intermetallic compounds PbTe and SnTe are narrow band-gap semi-conductors and display complete solubilitv in the whole composition range. The carriers concentration in PbTe materials changes with the diemical composition (p-type in the metal rich side and n-type in the tellurium rich side). A thermodynamic database has beoi contructed by H.L. Lukaet ds (8). The free energy function description of the system has been modelled in order to describe the departure from stoichiometry at all temperatures. This description allowed us to calculated the ternary phase diagram by the Calphad procedure and apply such data to control ball milling process. [Pg.125]
