In some ways, this is the same requirement faced when developing electronic nose technology. Sensor-based electronic noses are based upon an array of non-specific gas sensors coupled with a pattern recognition technique (Gardner and Bartlett, 1999 Pearce et al, 2003). Electronic noses tend to be large, expensive instruments. For example, the Fox 4000 electronic nose (Alpha MOS, France) comprises 18 power-hungry Taguchi-like metal oxide resistive gas sensors (see Fig. 15.11). [Pg.504]

Ferritic stainless steels depend on chromium for high temperature corrosion resistance. A Cr202 scale may form on an alloy above 600°C when the chromium content is ca 13 wt % (36,37). This scale has excellent protective properties and occurs iu the form of a very thin layer containing up to 2 wt % iron. At chromium contents above 19 wt % the metal loss owiag to oxidation at 950°C is quite small. Such alloys also are quite resistant to attack by water vapor at 600°C (38). Isothermal oxidation resistance for some ferritic stainless steels has been reported after 10,000 h at 815°C (39). Grades 410 and 430, with 11.5—13.5 wt % Cr and 14—18 wt % Cr, respectively, behaved significandy better than type 409 which has a chromium content of 11 wt %. [Pg.118]

Aluminum, the most common material used for contacts, is easy to use, has low resistivity, and reduces surface Si02 to form interfacial metal-oxide bonds that promote adhesion to the substrate. However, as designs reach submicrometer dimensions, aluminum, Al, has been found to be a poor choice for metallization of contacts and via holes. Al has relatively poor step coverage, which is nonuniform layer thickness when deposited over right-angled geometric features. This leads to keyhole void formation when spaces between features are smaller than 0.7 p.m. New collimated sputtering techniques can extend the lower limit of Al use to 0.5-p.m appHcations. [Pg.348]

Rhenium exhibits a greater resistance than tungsten to the water cycle effect, in which lamps and electron tubes become blackened by deposition of metal. This phenomenon involves catalysis by small quantities of water that react with the metal in a hot filament to produce a volatile metal oxide and hydrogen.
