The preparation of carbonylmetals by treating a transition metal halide either with carbon monoxide and zinc, or with iron pentacarbonyl is well-known and smooth. However, a violent eruptive reaction occurs if a methanolic solution of a cobalt halide, a rhodium halide or a ruthenium halide is treated with both zinc and iron pentacarbonyl.

The phase-transfer catalysed reaction of nickel tetracarbonyl with sodium hydroxide under carbon monoxide produces the nickel carbonyl dianions, Ni,(CO) 2- and Ni6(CO)162, which convert allyl chloride into a mixture of but-3-enoic and but-2-enoic acids [18]. However, in view of the high toxicity of the volatile nickel tetracarbonyl, the use of the nickel cyanide as a precursor for the carbonyl complexes is preferred. Pretreatment of the cyanide with carbon monoxide under basic conditions is thought to produce the tricarbonylnickel cyanide anion [19], as the active metal catalyst. Reaction with allyl halides, in a manner analogous to that outlined for the preparation of the arylacetic acids, produces the butenoic acids (Table 8.7). 

At ordinary temperatures tin is stable in air. It actually forms a very thin protective oxide film. In powder form, and especially in the presence of moisture, it oxidizes. When heated with oxygen it forms tin(IV) oxide, Sn02.Tin reacts with all halogens forming their halides. Reaction with fluorine is slow at ordinary temperatures however, chlorine, bromine and iodine readily react with the metal... 

The main synthetic technique for obtaining carbyne complexes is through the reaction of carbene compounds with metal halides, preferably with those of Group IIIA [259c] as, for example, through reaction (2.2) ...

Similar arguments are also valid for the successful preparation of hydridophosphinemetalates (shown in Figure 5) from the reaction of transition metal halide complexes with KH and suitable crown ether reagents <1998JA13138>. These materials are quite interesting for their reactivity as strong nucleophiles and reductants.
