Mercury has several other characteristics that make it of particular environmental concern and make it likely to be found as many different species. It is a natural constituent of soil, although it occurs at low concentrations. It is widely used both in industry and in the laboratory, making it a common contaminant of reference soils. Metallic mercury has a relatively high vapor pressure, which means that it can occur in measurable amounts in the soil atmosphere. It has a high affinity for reduced sulfur compounds in soil solids and soluble organic matter that allows species to be present in the soil solution above mercury s solubility limit. 

Silver is the sixty-third most abnndant metal in Earth s crust the average concentration of silver in water is 0.5 ppb, in soil it is 10 ppb. It is fotmd naturally as native metal or in ores in which it is complexed with lead, copper, tellurium, mercury, arsenic, or antimony. Silver is fonnd mainly throughont the Americas, Japan, Anstraha, and central Europe. Extraction is by amalgamation and displacement (nsing mercnry), solution, or smelting methods. 

The preceding descriptions are based on a metallic electrode in laboratory conditions under potential control, a situation that is not, in principle, representative of what can be found in a complex natural system as a soil. However, we presented these results because liquid mercury is a surface as devoid of structure as possible, thus concentrating ourselves in the contributions to the charge from the solution side.
