Membranes, mechanisms

Fouling of the pH sensor may occur in solutions containing surface-active constituents that coat the electrode surface and may result in sluggish response and drift of the pH reading. Prolonged measurements in blood, sludges, and various industrial process materials and wastes can cause such drift. Therefore, it is necessary to clean the membrane mechanically or chemically at intervals that are consistent with the magnitude of the effect and the precision of the results requited. [Pg.466]

Cell wall Peptidoglycan a rigid framework of polysaccharide cross-linked by short peptide chains. Some bacteria possess a lipopolysaccharide- and protein-rich outer membrane. Mechanical support, shape, and protection against swelling in hypotonic media. The cell wall is a porous nonselective barrier that allows most small molecules to pass. [Pg.25]

Plastic membrane This is done by the use of a water permeable plastic membrane held deep enough under the sea so that the hydrostatic pressure is greater than the osmotic pressure of the seawater. The water distills out of the solution through the membrane and is pumped to the surface. Large areas of the membranes, mechanically supported to withstand the very high pressures are essential to make the process perform rapidly for the most economical production. [Pg.265]

The most commonly used methods for studies of partitioning into a membrane, mechanisms of drug absorption, and interactions with epithelial proteins, such as transporters and enzymes, are the cell culture-based models. These are both sim-... [Pg.94]

Under steady-state operation with a constant water flux through the membrane, mechanical equilibrium of water will prevail locally at external membrane faces and inside fhe membrane that involves the balance of local liquid, gas, capillary, and elastic pressures. This condition corresponds to a stationary distribution of wafer in the membrane. However, the condition of chemical equilibrium, Equafion (6.5), will be violafed due to the chemical flux of species. [Pg.379]

Based on the authors experience, membrane fracture frequently occurs during events when membrane is dried out the in-plane hygrothermal stress is a critical driving force in membrane mechanical failure. The in-plane hygrothermal stress can be lowered by reducing the swelling/shrinkage ratio of the membrane, i.e., the dimensional instability of the membrane. [Pg.12]

Early research of ionomer membrane degradation was conducted in the context of PEM electrolyzers. The detection of fluoride and other chain fragments in the condensed effluent water indicates the decomposition of PFSA ionomer and has long been noticed. Baldwin15 reported the detection of fluoride in the effluent of PEM electrolyzer and believed that it is the result of membrane mechanical failure. Extensive research has been conducted to elucidate the reaction pathways for membrane decomposition. Many controversial results and mechanisms have been reported in the literature, demonstrating the complex nature and the current inadequate understanding of the membrane degradation mechanisms. [Pg.16]
