Industrial interest soon expanded the network and the current membership now exceeds 1000. Since mid-2001 the NEXUS network has been transformed into the NEXUS Associatiorf based in Grenoble, France. NEXUS activities continue to be strongly supported by the European Commission and MEMS/MST-related industry. [Pg.295]

Mme. Curie was persuaded to become a candidate for membership in the Academy of Sciences of Paris, which Pierre had joined in 1905. The taboo of sex was again raised in that circle of distinguished scientists. No woman had ever been elected to that body. There was an immutable tradition against the election of women, which it seemed eminently wise to respect. Levelheaded scientists suddenly became excited. There was much heated discussion. Marie, of course, remained in the background. When, on January 2S, 1911, the vote was taken, Mme. Curie failed of election by but two votes, and Edouard Branley, inventor of the coherer used in the detection of wireless waves, was selected instead. France never lived down this episode of bigotry. [Pg.168]

One interviewee described that employer opposition to the Worker Safety Advisor scheme has halted its development across all industry sectors in the UK [395, 396]. French interviewees described several safety representative state-sponsored schemes in France, but the resources appear far more restricted than in Sweden. There was no evidence from the interviews or literature review to indicate that Germany has such a scheme. Evidence from the interviews indicates that such schemes in France and Sweden link to their strong social health care system, with very high union membership distinguishing Sweden from France. [Pg.132]

In 1889, still very young, Henri Becquerel was elected a member of the Academie des Sciences de France. His membership there came to be important in coimection with the discovery of uranium radiation. The Becquerel family, Henri s father Alexandre-Edmond and also his grandfather Antoine-Edmond, had been passionately interested in luminescence. Henri himself had, for his father s investigations, prepared beautiful crystals of potassium uranyl sulfate, a substance with fluorescing properties. In his earliest scientific work he also was concerned with the phenomenon of phosphorescence and with the absorption of light by crystals (the subject of his doctoral thesis). [Pg.1176]
