To understand the magnitude of contamination of POPs in Vietnam, residue concentrations in air, water, and sediments were compared with those in other countries in Asia-Pacific (Fig. 11.4). Higher contamination of DDTs in Vietnamese coastal environments was recorded, again indicating the extensive use of this insecticide in Vietnam. The four main river basins are placed on this area Amur, Huanghe, Yangtze and Mekong rivers. There are also plenty of middle and small rivers in East Asia. These rivers are drained into East (Japan), Yellow, East China and South East China Seas of the Pacific ocean.

Acid rains were also recently reported in Ho Chi Minh city (Thuc and Yen, 1997). At present 67% of rain events in Can Tho, the Mekong River Delta, has pH values less than 5.0, and 11%, pH 5.1-5.6 (Radojevic, 1998).

With the pohcy factor p = 10 the limit line hes above the FN-curve. This means that flooding in Vietnam is acceptable if flood accident is viewed as similar as a voluntary activity with direct benefit. This might be true only for some specific rural areas in the low-lying Mekong river delta where floating house are popular and annual flood brings fertilizing rice fields. 

The Mekong river delta is selected as the study site for the prospective system as it is the largest area for the cultivation of rice in Vietnam, with more than 50% of rice yield, and a rice production yield of 24.29 rmUion tonnes in 2012 [37]. Because of high production yield, the amount of rice husk is therefore large, which makes this area technically suitable for constructing a bioelectricity plant with rice husk as raw material.
