The main purpose of the first meeting is to establish the groimd rules for the mentoring relationship and to exchange relevant information. The following points could become part of the process. 

Although mentees may already have mentioned some of their problems, aims and objectives when detailing their expectations, these topics should be discussed in more detail. It might be the case that mentees are not yet clear about what aims they seek to achieve. Identifying these is, of course, an ongoing process, which does not only occur during the first meeting. 

Attending the first meeting to help clarify any issues and fo provide help wifh documenfafion. This, however is nof very common and only occurs in a handful of schemes. 

It is essential that good documentation procedures be established during the first meeting of the team.

On a practical note, it is worth making it clear, when you interview the client s staff, that your project is engaged in improving support for them in their work and that they are to be the prime consultants about what is required. After this is clear, enthusiastic cooperation is usually forthcoming. Nearly everyone loves the opportunity to explain what he or she does to a receptive ear. For that reason, do not be afraid to go back and ask again. Make it clear, when you leave the first meeting, that the usual procedure is to digest the information in your own terms and return later to ask for clarifications.
