For the literature on dosage forms, drug delivery, pharmacy practice, pharmacy law, cosmetics, pharmaceutical technology, and herbal medicines, IPA is one of the premier resources.

The major part of the traditional systems of herbal medicine, which includes folk health tradition, has transformed into trade over the period of time. At present, the herbal health care system may be broadly differentiated into the resource, trade and consumption. 

During the recent past, rising commercial demand for herbal drugs and dependence on produce harvested from the wild has led to the rapid depletion of a number of MAPs (Maikhuri et al., 1998a 2002 Nautiyal et al., 2002). The bulk of the medicinal plant is still harvested from the wild and only a very small number of species are cultivated (FAO, 1993). About 30% of the drugs sold worldwide contain compounds derived from the plants. Thus, it is now essential to focus on the conservation of natural resources, especially the biodiversity hotspots of the world. 

Plant parts have a widespread use in traditional medicine (such as Indian ayurvedic medicine and Chinese herbal remedies), providing clues to bioactive principles with novel health and nutritional benefits that will contribute to resources for metabolic engineering. The small fraction of plants so far surveyed (<15%i of terrestrial plants) has revealed an astonishing potential for the biosynthesis of small (<1000 Da) molecules, with over 100,000 of these phytochemicals already described. These phytochemicals accumulate largely as a consequence of biotic and abiotic interactions of plants with their environment, and are mainly derived from what has been classically known as secondary...

To take advantage of the vast resource of Chinese herbal medicine as a source of cosmetic ingredients, it is necessary to define in a broad sense the scope of cosmetic properties and cosmetic usages.
