The Motherisk protocol allowed us to record in a systematic manner all exposure data and other maternal and paternal medical details at the time of exposure during the first trimester of pregnancy and to follow up pregnancy outcomes prospectively in this eohort. In case of accidental eye contact, immediately flush with water for at least 15 minutes and seek medical attention. The cyanine class of dyes is also useful in biological, medical, laser, and electro-optic appHcations. Dyes marketed as Povan [3546-41-6] (5) and Dithiazanine [7187-55-5] (6) are useful anthelmintics, and Indocyanine Green [3599-32-4] (7) is an infrared-absorbing tracer for blood-dilution medical diagnoses. "Stains-AU." is a weU-studied biological stain (8) and Merocyanine 540 s photochemotherapeutic activity is known in some detail (9). Many commercially available red and infrared laser dyes are cyanines (10). 

Pure Ethanol. Undenatured ethanol can be bought on either a tax-free or tax-paid basis. Approved educational, scientific or medical organizations and pubHc agencies can buy tax-free alcohol. Use and withdrawal permits are required, as are a bond and detailed records. Resale of tax-free ethanol is prohibited. Approved industrial uses for pure tax-paid ethanol include pharmaceuticals, cosmetics, flavoring extracts, and foods. 

Table 3 lists the structures and generic names of the principal penicillins in current medical usage, and Table 4 indicates in summary form the relative antibacterial properties of these compounds. The reader is urged to consult reviews such as (B-77MI51106) for a more complete treatment, since summaries such as Table 4 inevitably omit a large amount of important detail. 

As can be seen from Table 3, only modifications at the 6/3-amino groups have been successful in producing penicillins of medical significance up to this time. Several reviews have dealt with the structure-activity relationship in this area in considerable detail B-80MI51102, B-77MI51106, B-75MI51102) and should be consulted for the actual effects of structural modification on antibacterial activity.

In 1937 Krebs found that citrate could be formed in muscle suspensions if oxaloacetate and either pyruvate or acetate were added. He saw that he now had a cycle, not a simple pathway, and that addition of any of the intermediates could generate all of the others. The existence of a cycle, together with the entry of pyruvate into the cycle in the synthesis of citrate, provided a clear explanation for the accelerating properties of succinate, fumarate, and malate. If all these intermediates led to oxaloacetate, which combined with pyruvate from glycolysis, they could stimulate the oxidation of many substances besides themselves. (Kreb s conceptual leap to a cycle was not his first. Together with medical student Kurt Henseleit, he had already elucidated the details of the urea cycle in 1932.) The complete tricarboxylic acid (Krebs) cycle, as it is now understood, is shown in Figure 20.4. 

A series of polyester-based TPU (566TPU series) were synthesized in our lab and used to blend with PVC to manufacture a modified PVC material for medical uses [14]. Morphological studies showed that 566TPU has very good compatibility with PVC. Detailed mechanical and electronic property tests were also conducted. Some of the data are provided in Tables 3 and 4.
