Some of the common anthelmintics used to kill the basic types of worms in humans are listed in Table 35-5. These agents are often very effective a single oral dose is usually sufficient to selectively destroy the parasite. Brief descriptions of the basic pharmacologic effects and possible adverse effects of the primary anthelmintic agents are presented below. Another anthelmintic used in the treatment of Schistosoma infections, niri-dazole (Fig. 8 d) is reported to cause pulmonary tissue eosinophilia and an increase in blood eosinophil counts (Farid et al. 1973). The structural relationship of this nitrothiazole to nitrofurantoin, (Fig. 8e) another drug causing pulmonary eosinophilia, should be noted (Elmes 1975 Rosenow 1976).
