Where assessment shows this to be necessary, or where COSHH sets specific requirements, regular medical checks, such as blood lead levels, might be needed.

The other corporate influence is that of managed care. The mercury content of urine samples of people working in the polarographic laboratory in Basle compares with values of individuals not exposed to mercury. Nevertheless, periodic medical check-ups are recommended for those potentially exposed. 

An important part of most medical check-nps is the measurement of blood pressure. The reason for this is to detect the presence of hypertension or higher-than-normal blood pressure. Hypertension, a widespread health problem in our society, can cause other harmful health conditions such as kidney disease. The presence in the body of an octapeptide called angiostensin 11 causes high blood pressure by constricting the muscles that surround blood vessels. With the blood vessels constricted, the heart must work harder and exert higher pressure to pump blood through the cardiovascular system. 

Regular medical checks should be carried out on people working with processes involving toxic substances, and the outcome recorded. Health records should be kept for an extended period.
