Possible future pharmacological treatments could be based on the inhibition of proinflammatory mediators, prevention of adhesion between the leukocytes and endothelial cells, controlling the specific transduction pathway signals following cytokine production and promoting neovascularization. Strategies that block the activity of inflammation-induced enzymes, such as iNOS and COX-2 should also be investigated.

In this manner, a current efficiency of 100% is maintained. Furthermore, since the concentration of Ce + remains at its initial level, the potential of the working electrode remains constant as long as any Fe + is present. This prevents other oxidation reactions, such as that for liiO, from interfering with the analysis. A species, such as Ce +, which is used to maintain 100% current efficiency, is called a mediator. 

The latter method typically requires less severe conditions than the former because of the labile nature of the organic anhydride (87,137). Both of these reactions can result in explosions and significant precautions should be taken prior to any attempted synthesis of a peracid (87). For soHd peracids the reaction mixture can be neutralized with sodium hydroxide and the resulting fUtercake washed with water. In the case of the sulfuric acid mediated reaction the peracid has sodium sulfate incorporated in the cake (135). The water of hydration present in the sodium sulfate is desirable to prevent detonation or deflagration of the soHd peracid when isolated in a dry state (87,138,139). 

In Vitro Anticoagulants. A number of substances have been identified that prevent coagulation of the blood when it is removed from the vascular compartment of the body. Most of these substances remove a vital constituent of the blood that is essential in the mediation of transformation of hquid blood into a soHd. 

Calcium Channel Blockers. Because accumulation of calcium is one of the facets of the mote involved process leading to atherosclerosis, it would foUow that the antihypertensive calcium channel blockers might be effective in preventing atheroma. Both verapamil (Table 1) and nifedipine (Table 3) have been shown to stimulate the low density Upoprotein (LDL) receptor (159). This specific receptor-mediated pathway could theoretically improve Upid metaboUsm in the arterial wall, and thereby prove antiatherogenic. These effects have been proven in animals. 

Following the action of extraordinary stimulants (hypoxic hypoxia, hypoxia + hyperoxia, hypodynamia + hyperthermia), animals demonstrate an accumulation of malonic dialdehyde with a simultaneous fall of antiradical activity of the liver tissue. A preliminary introduction to rats of acetylene amine 3,4,5-tris(morpho-linopropynyl)-l-methylpyrazole 103 and also of tocopherol antioxidant and gutumine antihypoxant averts activation of the lipid peroxidation processes. The inhibition of peroxidation with this agent is mediated by stabilization of ly-zosomal and mitochondrial membranes. Unsaturated amines prevent destruction of the organelle membranes provoked by UV irradiation and incubation at 37°C (pH4.7)(78MIl). 

Allergy. Figure 6 Anti IgE antibodies prevent IgE from binding to their receptors on mast cells, and thus from releasing allergic mediators.
