Mechanical sensitivity, reactivity hazards

Evaluation of Reactivity and Hazards of Oxidizing Agents and Their Components (X), Mechanical Sensitivity of Oxidizing Agent Red-Phosphorus by Direct Impact Method of the Drop Ball Tester", Nihon Kasai Gakkai Ronbun-Shi (Bulletin of Japan Fire Control Association), 36, 9 (1987)... [Pg.31]

Among hazardous reactive chemicals, special attention should be paid to those which easily explode by mechanical impact or friction. The use of these chemicals without knowledge of their characteristics inevitably leads to an accident These chemicals include Dibenzoylperoxide (BPO), 5—chloro-1,2,3-thiadiazole (5—CT),mixtures of chlorate and red phosphorus, and 2,4—dinitro- phenylhydrazine (DNPH). Appropriate handling procedures for these highly sensitive chemicals during preliminary evaluations must be established. [Pg.24]

BIETHYLENE (106-99-0) QH Extremely flammable, polymerizable gas extremely low ignition temperature makes it very dangerous [explosion limits in air (vol %) 2.0 to 11.5 flash point -105°F/-76°C autoignition temp 788°F/420°Ct Fire Rating 4]. Self-reactive. In absence of an inhibitor (e.g., ferf-butyl catechol), autoxidation forms heat-, mechanical shock-, and impact-sensitive peroxides with air. Fires, explosions, or hazardous polymerization may result from contact with strong oxidizers, aliuninumtetrahydroborate, copper, high copper alloys, chlorine dioxide. [Pg.134]

This chapter mainly discusses health effects. Chapters 16 and 17 discussed fire and explosion hazards. Reactivity refers to the relative stability of a material. In a fire a material may become unstable from the heat or products of combustion. Some materials may be sensitive to mechanical disturbance from pressure or physical impact. Extinguishing agents, such as water, can react with certain materials. A reaction may involve releases of large amounts of energy and the release may be sudden, as in an explosion. [Pg.340]
