Niobium is also important in nonferrous metallurgy. Addition of niobium to tirconium reduces the corrosion resistance somewhat but increases the mechanical strength. Because niobium has a low thermal-neutron cross section, it can be alloyed with tirconium for use in the cladding of nuclear fuel rods. A Zr—l%Nb [11107-78-1] alloy has been used as primary cladding in the countries of the former USSR and in Canada. A Zr—2.5 wt % Nb alloy has been used to replace Zircaloy-2 as the cladding in Candu-PHW (pressurized hot water) reactors and has resulted in a 20% reduction in wall thickness of cladding (63) (see Nuclear reactors). [Pg.26]

The Model 412 PWR uses several control mechanisms. The first is the control cluster, consisting of a set of 25 hafnium metal rods coimected by a spider and inserted in the vacant spaces of 53 of the fuel assembhes (see Fig. 6). The clusters can be moved up and down, or released to shut down the reactor quickly. The rods are also used to (/) provide positive reactivity for the startup of the reactor from cold conditions, (2) make adjustments in power that fit the load demand on the system, (J) help shape the core power distribution to assure favorable fuel consumption and avoid hot spots on fuel cladding, and (4) compensate for the production and consumption of the strongly neutron-absorbing fission product xenon-135. Other PWRs use an alloy of cadmium, indium, and silver, all strong neutron absorbers, as control material. [Pg.217]

Some of the restrictions on the use of aluminum are caused by manufacturing and fabrication problems and by its low mechanical strength. Quantifying the effect of surface roughness or morphology is difficult, however. Surface preparations that provide different degrees of surface roughness also usually produce surfaces that have different oxide thicknesses and mechanical properties, different compositions, or different contaminant levels. The problem of separation of these variables was circumvented in a recent study [52] by using a modified microtome as a micro milling machine to produce repeatable, well-characterized micron-sized patterns on clad 2024-T3 aluminum adherends.
