Linear Elastic Fracture Mechanics Behavior of Graphite... [Pg.491]

The few studies which addressed the fracture mechanics behavior of very small cracks generally revealed a quantitative departure from behavior determined at longer crack lengths. This result may be attributed to a departure from perfect mechanical and microstructural similitude between long and small cracks. [Pg.497]

Fracture mechanic The fracture mechanics theory developed for metals is also adaptable for use with plastics. The basic concepts remain the same, but since metals and plastics are different they require different techniques to describe their fatigue-failure behaviors. Some of the comments made about crack and fracture influences on fatigue performance relate to the theory of fracture mechanics. The fracture mechanics theory method, along with readily... [Pg.85]

Given the existence of interphases and the multiplicity of components and reactions that interact to form it, a predictive model for a priori prediction of composition, size, structure or behavior is not possible at this time except for the simplest of systems. An in-situ probe that can interogate the interphase and provide spatial chemical and morphological information does not exist. Interfacial static mechanical properties, fracture properties and environmental resistance have been shown to be grealy affected by the interphase. Careful analytical interfacial investigations will be required to quantify the interphase structure. With the proper amount of information, progress may be made to advance the ability to design composite materials in which the interphase can be considered as a material variable so that the proper relationship between composite components will be modified to include the interphase as well as the fiber and matrix (Fig. 26). [Pg.30]

This chapter summarizes several studies of PTFE utilizing a range of techniques and leading to an interpretation of mechanical behavior in terms of structure at all stages of deformation, up to and including fracture. [Pg.4]

In fundamental solid mechanics including fracture mechanics studies, the requirement is to determine the stress-strain curves and to study the propagation of a crack in a substance. Understanding the behavior of crack propagation was essential for the modem day development of plastic products. [Pg.298]

From a practical point of view, the main consequence of physical ageing by structural relaxation is embrittlement (decrease in fracture resistance Chapter 12). For the other aspects of mechanical behavior, ageing has either no effect or a favourable effect (increase of relaxation times, leading to a decrease of creep or relaxation rates). This is the reason why, in most thermoset applications, the knowledge of short-term properties is considered to be sufficient for engineering design, as far as fracture and durability are not concerned. [Pg.337]

The macroscopic properties such as mechanical behavior of block copolymers or polymer blends depend directly on the relative concentrations of different constituents and their meso-structures. How to predict the exact macroscopic properties of polymer blends or block copolymers with meso-phase separation structures from pure component properties remains a big challenge. Some theoretical efforts have been explored. For example, Buxton et al. found that the deformations and fractures of polymer blends can be described by the... [Pg.211]

It is well established that improvements in the room-temperature fracture toughness of ceramics can be achieved by whisker reinforcement, and various mechanisms have been proposed to explain the phenomenon. Recently, two studies have examined the fracture behavior of SiC whisker-reinforced alumina composites at high temperatures to determine the dependence of fracture toughness on temperature, the effect of test atmosphere on fracture toughness, and mechanisms of fracture.33,34 In both studies, single-edged-notched bars... [Pg.281]
